what concition is the belt in, you might find that if its old worn and shiney that when you increase the revs, the belt is simply slipping and not creating enough pressure to supply to the PAS.

I wonder if there is air getting sucked in? Had any mysterious leaks in the past?

Air gets in through the hose from the LHM reservoir and the pump. As this pipe is under suction there is seldom any leakage of LHM - just air getting in - usually at where the pipe fixes to the reservoir. The pipe itself can go porous .

As the system is designed to run on oil - air causes all manner of problems - either due to compressing or due to passing through valves and other devices relying on the viscosity or surface tension of the LHM.

The LHM pump belt must be REALLY tight - if its a diesel the pump is over the gearbox - slacken the mounting bolt at the bottom a bit as well as the slider pivot bolt and the slider bolt itself, lever with something strong, tighten the slider bolt first to hold it then the other 2. By tight I dont mean that it can be deflected 1/2 inch - thats for other cars - I mean tight.

thanks for that, i also noticed that when i checked the level by taking the cap with the pipes off that the oil was frothy at 1st as if it had had air blown through it and also 1 of the pipes had a few bubbles leaking at the point that it conects with the cap so does this confirm the air leak??

I had this problem - it was fixed by running LHM flushing fluid in the car for a few thousand miles. Seems the system sludges up in places if the LHM goes too long unchanged.
