Its the short runs that are the killers in a petrol car. Our ZX was a replacement for a Mini 1000, and the savings seem considerable (OK made to look better by the much larger tank of the ZX but its really treated as 8 gallons - the same as the mini - as the gauge reads empty with about 4 gallons left)

On long runs it does high 50's - the last comparable petrol was a Renault 21 - which was much faster but would do 43 or so without trouble but dropped to 25 on moderate (say 5 mile) runs and below that on shorter runs. Diesels seem to drop to high 30's under the same conditions.

I would also say the the difference between the BX TD and the ZX 1.9D is minimal - which I suppose means that the turbo bit comes fairly free.

Would I have another petrol - yes if it was a better car than a family saloon or general runabout. It would have to be reasonable - otherwise I'd be finding excuses not to use it which would spoil the fun. If only the 1.8 Mazda MX5 that I think my brother may be getting rid of wasn't so slow!

This whole diesel / petrol, cheap / expensive debate is all well and good BUT:

I have both, and my petrols a valver, now if driven carefully it'll return 42mpg over a long distance, thats not too far short of the diesel (50-55mpg) so factor in the cost difference and it nearly evens out. Ok, so I tend to enjoy the valver and rarely get 42 out of it, but I DO ENJOY IT!
Aarons car looks like a stunner, based on what the actual car is like to drive I wouldn't care what the economy was, so lomg as I enjoyed drving it, and I like auto BX's (especially dads :D ), so I think I'd fall in love with it and the cost of fuel would not be an issue, thats not to say I've got lots of money, cos I dont!
I'm sure the economy could be improved with a bit of fettling anyway.

The rubber spoiler clinches it for me, if I needed a BX right now I'd have ripped Aarons arm off for it. The car is in really good nick by the looks of it and it's cheap, very cheap! That'll make someone a VERY nice car.

Wanab-x, if you get it (and I hope you do) then I'm in Berkshire quite often and the guys on here are great for tech stuff, and taking the pi$$ obviousley!!!
The car deserves to go to a good home, just as Sleepy has given it one.

Cheers

It is a beauty to drive and on the open road it just glides along I have found myself doing a lot more than the required speed on a few occasions and had to pull her up a bit.

As I've never driven a diesel, won't notice the difference in economy (one way of thinking about it, anyway! ), and an auto should be nice for the majority of driving I do, plus maybe The Management would like to get involved - she only likes autos really...

Couple of things that maybe you guys can help me with:

If Aaron goes ahead & sells me the car, it'll be the first car (except the new Mini I learned to drive in) I'll have driven that's FWD. Got a Smart for 'the wife' & a '68 Triumph that's been my daily driver, plus a non-working Volvo 360 2ltr at the mo - what will be different about driving a FWD?

Secondly, as a matter of interest, shouldn't this car, as a TZS, have different bumpers, complete with foglights? Think Aaron mentioned somewhere that he's changed the bumpers earlier in the year, wouldn't mind the extra lighting capacity that fogs give. Also would get the car looking more original...

Thirdly, I'm based near Windsor in Berkshire. Who's around this kinda area? Would be good to know who's around - I will be heading down to the Southampton area fairly often in 2007. Might occasionally need advice/help with the car - if Aaron says yes - plus it would be good to have recommendations for specialists in the area.

Just hoping I get a nice reply now - all excited!!!

Andrew
Good luck mate, its a lovely car.

It is in original form, so far as I can see. The only TZ to have the fogs, splitter and hot spoiler etc, was the TZD Turbo hatch model, as it was basically a GTi with a diesel engine in it. This excludes the Hurricane models.
All other TZ's, like the TZD Turbo estate, 16/19TZS and 19TZD hatches came with the original TZ trim, as seen on Aarons car. In hatch form, its actually quite a rare sight these days, and as far as I'm concerned a welcome one as its probably the nicest looking BX hatch (other than 16v/Sport etc etc).

As far as the FWD thing goes, all FWD cars have different handling characteristics. BX's aren't tricky cars at all, the handling is lovely and fluid thanks largely to the suspension. If you push it hard through a bend what will result is largely just understeer as well as a fair bit of bodyroll by todays standards. But they do hang on well if you're on a spirited run and only break away if you either abuse it or don't know what you're doing.
On a fast bend, a bit of lift off on the gas pedal will see the back end start to come out, but it is very easily controlled and not snappy in the slightest. I've never spun a BX....and I've spun lots of cars :P
That said, I've only ever got the tail out on the 16v's, never on any other model either.
Besides, I doubt you'll push it that hard. For a FWD car, the BX handles very neatly and is a lovely drive.

As far as your location goes, theres a few members around Berkshire IIRC (head honcho isn't too far I believe) and as for Southampton you've got Jeremy, Tom, Bernie (still don't know who he is), Captain Slow, Capri, Ellevie.....and oh.....me

Hello! Car did beautifully yesterday - after filling (almost) up with petrol, did 100 miles straight off, then had a quick break & home by 4:20 - less than 3 hours for the 160-odd miles. Car (think she might be called Flossie...) went fine, drifted up to 90 a couple of times. Used about 1/3 of a tank, which seems reasonable to me - average of 56mph for the journey, including stops.

Put about £45 into the tank & didn't fill up - how big is the tank from empty? Also, please can someone let me know about moving the ride height lever - wasn't sure how to move it, & didn't want to break anything...

Off to Southampton shortly!

Think yours will be the 10 gall tank???

They are luvly cruisers, when I started driving BX's I always found I was going much faster than I thought I was! It's even worse in an auto, the speed just seems to creep and you're doing 90 mph when it feels like 50!

The height lever is easy matey, just push the lever gently to the left (towards the passenger seat) then move it forward or backward as desired. They have little cut outs in the gate that lock the lever in each position hence the need to move it to the right. ALWAYS drive it in normal ride height though (The thick white line) unless your driving over VERY rough ground.

P.S. Dont be a stranger Sleepy...

Cheers
