Thanks Jeremy! That sounds like welcome news. I was sure that it would be possible and, bearing in mind that I'll want to flush the radiator this year, I had thought of taking it out for this work. A bit of hardboard to protect the condenser though, will certainly be in evidence!

Just thinking about it -- when I had the top mount off to do the cambelt the engine tipped back with some determination. Angled sump doesn't help but I don't think I could have pulled it forward if I had tried - so a bit of ingenuity may be needed.

Back in Borehamwooden after the usual run up the M3, I can report that the car has much improved smoothness although there is still much to do. I spent the afternoon cutting brass shim stock up to get the rear arms dead right so I'll be looking forward to that!

Funny thing, life.

I was saying to Stewart that I would like to start reconditioning various parts, and my starter engine packs up and gives me the opportunity to do just that.

On Saturday I was thinking that it would be worth doing a big recondition, and here Tom is doing exactly that.

I'm actually quite turned on at the thought of making the car better than new. Does that make me sad? a pervert? both?

Keep us updated Tom

Thanks Ellevie. You are in my neck of the woods; did you use a local dealer?

It was Freeborns. I didn't buy any of it, I just checked on price and availability. Only the small kit was in stock, the remainder would have had to be ordered in from central stores.

Yes, I had those part numbers already to hand before I contacted them. Otherwise they ask me for the car registration number and then they seem to come up against a brick wall. The last time I got something I supplied the number and it was ordered in but I had to pay for it up front. I think you should be ok if you ask them to check availability against the part numbers and then take it from there.

Wyatts in Winchester were always supposed to be more helpful. I've never used them myself but might be worth a try.

I have certainly found Wyatts helpful in the past and Yeoman's at Fareham seem to have a good attitude to older Citroens.

When I did my h/g I removed radiator, undid top mount after resting sump on a wooden block and used a spanish windlass round a bracket on head and the slam panel to pull engine forward. I could then "easily" get at manifolds! (I say I, but in truth my friend is an aircraft mechanic and I make the tea and hold things!) Martyn

I did the same (spanish windlass)when I replaced my turbo, the doseur should be reasonably accessed that way, It might be worth disconnecting gearchange rods/exhaust to gain more angle.

Well, ECP have let me down on the driveshaft:
2 weeks ago. We've got 'em. £35.
1 week ago. We need to do it on special order. 5 days, £58.
Yesterday. We can't get it.
One of their new rear brake pipes had been in a nasty accident before it got to me so the calipers won't be done this weekend and the driveshaft nut just wouldn't come undone so I changed all the spheres and am sulking. Tomorrow may be easier but today I can't quite raise the enthusiasm!
