The Hooligan seems to give about 45 per gallon, the Xantia a little less though that saw 50 over a tankful on holiday, probably french diesel

DTI??

DavidRutherford wrote:Even just a fraction out, and fuel consumption can be awful. The ONLY way to check it is to DTI measure the injection pump. I did this with my 1.9TD 405 and changed the average fuel consumption from high 30's (rubbish) to mid-high 40's (better)

Because of this, I now DTI the injection pump when I change a cambelt. It's amazing how much the timing can be out when you change the belt.
Can you please explain what is a DTI measure and where can I get this done. Can I ask for it to be done whilst having a cambelt changed?

On the comsumption topic: I seem to get high mileage from my BX 1.7 TD (about 60 mpg on a long run, maybe 45-50 around town). I drive without too much force, I don't accelerate hard between lights (what's the point?) and when I'm going down a hill I put it in neutral (there's a hill on the M40 in Oxfordshire that you can glide down for 2.5 miles!) - brake pads are cheaper relatively than fuel.

You use one of these to measure the injection pump stroke, and it's relative position to the engine. Fairly delicate task, and you have to be sure you're measuring correctly. Instructions are in Haynes, and surprisingly accurate.

You *could* ask a garage to do this, but most won't have much of a clue how to do it. Personally, I wouldn't trust a garage to get it right.

I agree David, The only garage I'd trust to do that sort of thing would be Bristol 2CV's round here. I know alot of garages in Brizzle that aint got a clue about injection pumps, most fire the car off to DTM (or any other diesel specialists). Handily I do mine myself!!

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

This is quite a funny question  Not picking holes in you but on a petrol pump it shows how many litres you put in as well 8) Prices Fluctuate so what you may get in one fill up will be differant to the next.

Reminds me of a Guy who used to come into a service station we run to grab 2 quid of petrol each day  One day he came in and started complaining that his Car was not as efficant on 2 quid as it used to be

How much do you pay for a litre of Diesel?

ps just to upset you Diesel is 93c a litre (32p) but you pay your Tax seperatly in a road user Charge per km so depends on you efficancy.

Hi Kiwi ....now I know this may sound silly, but I dunno exactly how much deisel is [I think its about 90p per litre .......I think petrol is about 84p per litre] ........I dont really clock the prices or amounts .........
I go to the cheapest?/handiest? garage to me [which is usually my local "Morrisons" supermarket] and I fill the car,and it usually costs me £10 per 100miles .......noting how much a litre it costs and how many litres it takes aint gonna get me more mpg ..so whats the point in worrying about it.
btw .......My 2CV costs around the same .......although it only does around 180 miles before showing "empty" .....which is when I fill up ......again,£18 does around 180 miles.

Well No but its going to give you a better understanding how many MPG your actually doing. Last year when the Fuel Price was rocketed to a all time high it then dropped within the space of a few weeks in October by 25% :D

Suddenly they found themselves being able to drive a extra 25miles per 100 miles. Thats why I used the 2 quid Guy whose Car was using more to travel to work. It was not his car getting less MPG it was his car getting less fuel to work with. That make sense?

OK! This is how I work my fuel consumption out and is the correct way, it also helps to know that MPG figure to work out how much I will save next time I can get to my Cheap refill site :P

Next time you fill up go to the Brim thats the point you can physically see the liquid. Dont think because the pumps clicked its full thats not accurate as that a splash back measure to stop contaminants entering the Service Station Pumps.

Drive a minimum of 100 miles preferably noting differant driving conditions eg urban 30mph or Motorway Cruising.

Refill to the brim and not the Litres required to fill

Divide Distance and Litres= Mile per litre then multiple by 4.5624 to get MPG. 8)

Me I just go with the first Part!

Try that over a few fill ups and you can see a rough idea of how your Driving affects your MPG.

Makes a interesting log and easier to spot Binding Brakes or some other problems.

That confirms it then ... mine's a fish ..... :(

last tank was worse still, although a lot of short hops ....

Gas test is OK ... does ignition timing make such a difference on a petrol car?
Might have shifted slightly when I changed the cap and arm....

Any other ideas. I don't drive like the maniac I was when I had the twin-cam ... loved the noise that motor made when you had it singing ... sounded like a chain-saw!

Sandles and socks anyone?

Just a thought...........is it the running of the hydraulic pump that makes our BX mpg figures poor compared to modern cars? On petrol I suppose the 8v efficiency is not as good as 16v as Doc has discovered in his 42 or high 30's returns on the BX 16v? :?

It's also unfortunate that the auto can't hold 4th gear below 38 mph so this also bites into the figure in these days of obsessively low speed limits.

I'm running a BX16 TXi - the late monopoint injection system. Over the last 20000 miles I've averaged 432 miles-per-filling. That comes out at 37.7 mpg.
