Re: Talking B____X
Well, the ZX failed its MOT on wear and tear items - no significant rust or engine issues... Just getting new shock absorber,cv joint gaiter, track rod ball joint sorted and hopefully new ticket...

Anyway,
Should get the non-hydropneumatic ZX sorted this Wednesday. Then my attention can turn to another thing to worry about lol

Re: Talking B____X
First rule in buying a 10-year old car off eBay, for a grand. Be prepared (as I was - just) to pay close to what you paid for it getting it sorted.
Let it begin: Started with new Bosch wiper blades all round (nudging £40). Then I have to collect 4 x 1200-mile only Kleber Quadraxer 205/55/16's still on their Union alloys tonight which'll be fitted this week... that's another £92 (eBay bargain!)...
Looking good...
But then today: Condition check and drain hole clearing, pair of new OE rear springs, trailing arm bushes, rear brake pads, and all-wheel alignment - that'll be £470 incl VAT... OK let's hope that cures the woefully fidgety back end!
Then there's thermostat, door mirror switch, air con regass (that's a summer job lol!) and a remap (which they can do at the place next door to the MG/Rover specialist for a discounted price).
So yes, looking like the rules apply...

Re: Talking B____X
If i remember rightly these had a somewhat notoriously fidgety rear end from new Phil, Im pretty sure there was a lot of work done on the back end of V6 and V8 models at the factory to try and cure them at the time.

Re: Talking B____X
Apparently there is a lot of adjustment options for the rear suspension and it was probably rarely set up right as it left Longbridge. Much tweaking required. As it happens with mine, both rear springs were fubar. These are being replaced, and new bushes fitted, then later today it's going onto a computerised jig that's used to prepare racing cars as well, to align the wheels correctly. Probably never been done right since new.

Re: Talking B____X
The ZX has developed a leak from the fuel pump. I already have a new Lucas CAV one here (wrapped up nice and safe with silicone damp trap), so next month I'll need to get it fitted. Bet that's not an easy job...

Re: Talking B____X
Kermit tells me it would be a good idea to do timing belt, tensioner, water pump (plus maybe cam cover gasket, aux belt...) at the same time... fair do's - looks like I'll be investing some money in the old gal...

Re: Talking B____X
Decided to get lots done including cambelt and waterpump, seals and cam cover gasket as well as the fitting of the new pump. New fuel filter too... Works out about £350 including parts and add to that the £50 I spent last year (fortunately) on a new pump from the CXM Rally and it still seems reasonable to get the ZX sorted. It's not long got its new MOT of course.
