Isn't that practice risky in terms of blocking the injectors or pump given that engine oil carries crud like carbon particles in suspension?

I've been doing the same for years. Given that the oil was lubricating the engine just fine, I see no reason why it won't lubricate my injection pump a bit. Burns fine too.

I came close to doing this the last time I changed my oil, but chickened out at the last minute. I shall the next time though!

I usually only put up to 2 litres of sump oil in a full tank of diesel, or it will smoke rather a lot.

Spread the 5 litres over 3 full tanks and it's fine.

I've never heard of that practice before :shock: Does this only work on older diesels like the xud or can you do the same on common rail motors as well? Does fuel economy suffer etc...

Anybody else tried this?

I would only do it on an 'old tech' diesel; common rail engines seem to be trouble enough running on diesel, so you'd have to be brave to try it ;-)

Engine oil is a mineral oil, so it will burn in a not-too-disimilar-manner to diesel fuel. Seals aren't an issue, but the viscosity could be an issue in anything with electronic injection.

Anyone who has experienced diesel-engine runaway will know only too well that engine oil burns just fine in a diesel engine.

Just to clarify, if its mineral oil you can use it fine on older diesels. However how about semi or fully synthetic oils with different viscocity levels other than 15w40?
