Is this gearbox still available? I've been after something to raise the gear ratios on my BX for a while. Also, do you have any idea of a price? PM me if needed. Thanks!

As Rutter has not replied I can help you out with the 5th gears. What gearbox do you have at the moment as the TD 5th gearset does not suit the final drive on some models.

Thanks for getting back to me Jaba.

The current gearbox is the Gti 4x4 gearbox in my car. Inside, it's identical to the 1.7 n/a diesel gearbox that I pulled apart. I assume that the TD gearing is higher than the standard diesel?

Is it the whole gearbox that you have or just 5th gear?
Also, where are you located?

Thanks.

I have both 5th gearset only or complete box. I am away in Italy at the moment until April when I would be able to sort out the bits you want.

Thanks for getting back to me Jaba. Ideally, I'd like the whole gearbox, as something is noisy in mine (I think it's the gearbox anyway), and I'd like to put all the TD gears in my gearbox so that there wouldn't be a huge jump between 4th and 5th.

I'm not in a particular rush to get it, as I've got a lot of odd jobs to work through in the meantime, so it's just a case of when you're back and when I can collect it.

Thanks!

Ok David. I have a choice of two. I am near Oxford btw. You may need a final drive swap as well. I have all the gear ratio tables at home and could look up your best options next month.

Thanks for getting back to me Jaba.

Just let me know when you're back home and we'll go from there. Oxford is a long way to travel, so it'll take some prior planning.

Provided that the final sun gears in all the manual gearboxes are the same size, then the final drive should swap over easily. I know that they're different in the auto boxes, but all the manual boxes that I've had apart so far have been the same.

If you could post those gear ratio tables too, that'd greatly help!

Here is the gearbox ratio table. However the tables do not show 4x4 box ratios but if it has the standard 8v GTi ratios then the TD 5th gear would be impossibly high so you would have to swap the final drive as well from the TD box.
I have a spreadsheet calculator I used in 2004 which takes the work out of the maths. I could send if that would help.

That table is a great help Jaba!

From what I can gather from it, I think that mine has the gear ratios for the 16TRI or 16V. The final drive is a 14/62, & the other speeds sound about right. That'd explain why it seems so low geared.

Are you back in the country yet?

Thanks!

Just to let you know Jaba, there's an error on that gear table. It could be that the gearboxes were modified after it was made, but the gear ratio for 1st gear in the TD box is 11/38; not 12/39. The rest are correct. (For the TD box anyway).

I'll post the gear ratios for the 4x4 box when I pull all of the gears out so that you can add it to the table. It might come in useful in future.

Currently, I'm inclined to think that it's essentially a 16v box, but with a lower ratio 1st; as I remember it being exactly the same as the 1.7 diesel, but I'll confirm my suspicions when I've dismantled it again.

Alright, I have some answers on these gearboxes! I had a Peugeot 405 mi16x4 gearbox which I've just disassembled; That had the gear ratios for the 6th or 7th one down in your table (that you wrote 16tri & 16V next to), only 1st gear is an 11/38, the same as the TD box I've just dissassembled, and 5th is an 35/28. Everything else is the same.

The Citroen BX GTi 4x4 gearbox is the same as the top one on your table, only 1st is an 11/38 again, so the ratio for 1st must've been changed in later production cars. You've wrote 17 diesel next to that one, so that explains why I found it to be exactly the same as the diesel gearbox that I disassembled years ago!

Oh, the 4x4 transfer box drive cog fits nicely on the 14/62, 16/67 & 16/63 final drives that I've tried, so I assume that it'll fit on any of them!
