^agreed^
It looks a nice BX Mk1 and will be worth a look but remember you're dealing with salesmen here!
Check also the front door hinge panels below windscreen pillars for rust - also the panel between the rear wing and sill.
for that money I'd expect recent service history - timing belt, engine filters, new LHM, spheres in the last 2 years.
As for the spec. well, the RD doesn't have the ace LED bar rev counter and I don't think it has the electric rear windows. It -should- have power steering and there are ways to check visually, if not it will be a 'mare to park.
Don't hold back tho - it looks nice, just ensure it's worth the money they're asking which is about right IF it has all the bits mentioned changed.

I was speaking with the guys who have that - nobody seems to be mentioning the name of the said er establishment but from what i gathered the salesman was saying it was owned by an ex-citroen mechanic whos replaced just about everything on the car to get it in top notch shape and it was the best ride he'd experienced in a mk1. There is some rust (treated and painted over in darker shade) around the bottom of the doors.
But you'd need to drive it and have a very thorough lookover. As i'm sure we all know sales people hone their craft to get you wondering if this very object of desire will be the thing that makes you smile everyday for the next few years. The mileage is probably high, but then if everything is sorted the engine is good for ever and very economical.
I kinda want it myself.

Hey Mr. Aero, hows Cyril?
will you be going to the National? I'm trying to line it up myself but have some work the previous evening so might have to do a through-the-night ferry!

Go for it! I like it a lot, but not big on the Pug wheels tho...scarecrow wrote:T
I'm going to sleep on it - the 'R' word has been mentioned and I don't really 'do' rust. But, are Mk 1 and Mk 2 doors the same?
MK2 front doors are identical, rears have only the tiniest of differences, that even an anorak can't spot when the doors are closed!

I will, however I'll not be in Cyril, I'll be in Aphrodite, the Mighty, mighty Slugmobile VII (that's my CX's full name btw) because I'll already be down that way and the nat rally is on my way home.. Should have Cyril at Stratford so you better go to that meeting. You know you need to... and with a bit of luck/joy I'll have Cyril looking sexy as.. (well fixed up bits of bodywork and maybe some new doors)will you be going to the National?
-Hey, don't let us put you off - just make sure it's worth it. If it's going to need some new items as soon as you get it home then it's not worth it in my book.In all honesty though it's unlikely that the work that's been carried out is that extensive as it's a trade sale, and they must be looking at making a reasonable profit.

Having slept on it I've decided against. Looking closely at the photos the rust is quite apparent - and appears to include that area where everybody says "watch out for rust here", (little panel between rear door and rear wing). It's a shame, but I bought one last year with a rubbish body because I was in a rush, and it was a waste of money. It seems to me that buying a type of car noted for its resistance to corrosion, which is showing signs of rust, would be daft for someone such as myself who loathes carrying out bodywork repairs.Aerodynamica wrote: -Hey, don't let us put you off - just make sure it's worth it. If anyone else is interested the car is being sold by Wolsey House Motors up in deepest, darkest Lincolnshire. Contact [email protected]
Thanks to everyone for their advice.

I can't tell you how tempted I am. The only thing that puts me off is the rust. Is it a big job replacing those little panels at the bottom back of the rear doors? What horrors might they be a portal to?ren16tx wrote:the fact that this is a diesel,it will be very cheap to run, and will soon pay for itself!! where else will you find a diesel mk1? i swear by mine!

That Mk1 that was going for £1250 was still up for sale on one of the websites I looked at today. Maybe it's just not been taken off yet. I'd be amazed if they got the asking price. The low mileage 16 txi that didn't sell on ebay a few weeks ago is up for sale for £1250 on the Guildford Gumtree.
Oh yeah, and there was a cheap GTI on the Reading gumtree, but the Ad was a month old.
Time will tell, but I have a feeling it's going to have to be an old Xantia for now.

Thing is, a car is worth exactly what someone is prepared to be for it. The fact that the specialist in question has had this car for so long is directly related to its rather optimistic pricing. Perhaps a sensible offer would be in order...

You're probably right there Philip, and the harder it is to find one the more I want one! Yes, I have a month before mine has to go and I imagine there will still be plenty of cheapo Xantia's about then if needs must.Philip Chidlow wrote:Don't give up. Go for a BX - one will come up soon.... 8)
The problem is I daren't go on the motorway as I'm afeared of the much-cracked windscreen giving way at any decent speed. Not least because my dog insists on hanging his head out of the window all of the time. In fact he sulks if he can't ride shotgun. I love the smiles he gets - ladies love him. Sadly that does not extend to the driver.

I don't suppose your insurance has windscreen replacement cover?scarecrow wrote: The problem is I daren't go on the motorway as I'm afeared of the much-cracked windscreen giving way at any decent speed. Not least because my dog insists on hanging his head out of the window all of the time.
