I'm wondering if you can register it in Ireland before you drive it back, which means it's then nothing to do with the UK rules.
Thats a damn good idea i hadn't thought of that. I just rang them and they say it needs to be here, although when i registered my BX all they needed was the documentation :? I've sent them an email to properly clarify explaining the circumstances. It would be handy!

I've just sent the VRSO an email too to ask whether a pre-booked test in Ireland is enough to be legal on the UK roads on the way to the Ferry.

If stopped by the Police with no MOT is it instant carlessness?

Not necessarily. Depends a lot on the officer, the circumstances, your attitude, if it's raining, etc.etc.

What's possibly more of a concern is to be picked up on an ANPR camera, which can then check in an instant if the vehicle has Tax, MOT test or insurance valid on it. In this instance, you'll get the car out of the UK, but possibly then get something in the post. Bit of a grey area really.

The other thing you could do is register the car as permanently exported, which means you can get a certificate of the vehicle particulars to then use to register it abroad. If you were ANPR'd on a car in that state, I doubt anything would come of it.

How much would it cost to have the car recovered to the ferry port?

I still have my UK licence so it may affect that.
