I wouldnt be running it just in case more damage is done .Richard.
Thanks Richard, yes, deep down I know you are right - I cruised it at 50 -60 yesterday and it just poured out smoke whether under power or on the overrun etc. I am so busy at the moment I have not had time to do a compression test but will. As far not driving it, that is not an option, it is my only car and i have a demanding work and family schedule; unfortunately I shall have to drive it until it blows.

Evening Simon. I understand your situation,i dont know how people manage with property prices down your way.Morgages must be unbelievable.
I hope you manage to nurse the old lady for a few more miles before she lets go completely .What do you intend to do when she does?
Just tootle past police cars in neutral ,ticking over or else you might get a pull for being un roadworthy though, dont know what your constabulary are like down there .Are they sympathetic to older cars?

Well, yes, I am tootling quietly around London. I just cannot justify fitting another engine, the time, the hassle, nowhere to park while I do it etc. Not sure what I shall do, if anyone is minded to give me some money they can drive it away - or maybe swap any sort of running car. It is not actually using a lot of oil - or petrol even. Does not take much oil to be burnt to produce a lot of smoke though... and I have just taxed it for 6 months and it has nearly a full MOT...
