Hi I can concur, I had to buy NINE before I got a set of four that balanced well.

I've actually got a bent one just hanging around in my garage doing nowt, can they actually be fixed, or once they are out of shape, thats it they are scrap?

On a more serious note, I noticed a slight vibration at, erm... 70mph this morning

This can be a problem with Speedlines, but I've only ever had one wheel that was totally beyond balancing.

After talking to a tyrefitter friend of mine I've took the plunge and ordered a set of 175/65 Michelins to try and improve the ride comfort with my 6" speedlines, 165/70 would have been too narrow for the 6" rims. Beeing fitted Monday.

I thought as an absolute minimum that 185's can be fitted to 6j's? I wouldn't have thought 175's suitable? i would think that they would however fit 5.5j's though?

Apparently not although 5.5 would no doubt be more suitable;

The Tyre spec states suitable rim 4.5" - 6"

And a tyre rim guide states;

Tyre Width Equivalency Table

Rim width Min tyre - Max tyre width
5 .0 inches 155 mm - 185 mm
5.5 inches 165 mm - 195 mm
6.0 inches 175 mm - 205 mm

As above from pg. 1 ; the wider 195's have ruined the ride quality. I'm trying to get back as close to the original 165's whilst keeping the Graphite Speedlines which realy do suit the car.

It's not the width that ruins the ride quality, it's the sidewall height. 165/70's have a sidewall height of 116mm, whereas 195/55's have a sidewall height of 107. Not a massive difference, but enough that there is a lot less flex in them, and so you get more high frequencies transmitted.

This is why modern cars have such terrible ride quality.. low profile tyres with tiny sidewall heights. Fit smaller wheels with high-profile tyres, and you have a soft ride again.

Rather than 185/60 tyres that are supposed to be specified on a BX, you might see if you can try some 185/65's. This will give you a 120mm sidewall, which should give much more comfort. Many 405's are fitted with this tyre size, and they have a remarkaby comfortable ride for a conventionally sprung car. Whip a set off a car in a breakers maybe to try for cheaps. (the wheels are a direct fit)
