You may like to consider adapting you XUD engine to burn small quantities of LPG (as well as diesel), this can work quite well providing you keep the quantity of LPG quite low.
Consider the LPG as an additive rather than a fuel, as it can improve MPG, reduce emmissions, and improve engine power.
However be aware that too much LPG can rapidly reduce engine life. The process of introducing the LPG into the engine is known in LPG circles as fumigation :o

That. The notion of trying to performance tune an n/a diesel is fairly comical.

If you want performance, theres only BX that really delivers it. Leave the diesels to what they do best.

I agree with you Kitch. It is comical - and the question was posed with tongue in cheek. The reason I asked is that as we have inherited a free BX 19 n/a for the Challenge and as it would be stupid to discard it and buy a TD or a GTi we will have to make the most of what we have, given we will be carrying kit and tools with us too. So making sure it's working as well as is reasonable to expect and losing some weight (personally too!) is sensible. Using the measures mentioned above we might expect another horsepower ( ) or not, but we will save 20+ kgs which is far more important. Especially as we'll putting at least that much back into the car!

I think you're absolutely fretting about nothing Phil. I did an endurance event in the 2CV a few years back. 3500 miles in a figure of eight around the UK in 17 days. We were camping, so had all that gear with us, in a car with 29bhp.

Just spend more time driving the na diesel to get used to it. There's no need to tinker!

Bearing in mind I will be in basically the same car and im not known for my speed, it will be like two LGV's restricted to 56mpg side by side down the autoroute taking 5 minutes to out do eachother!

I seem to remember that a certain 1.9na diesel seemed to reach the overnight destinations well ahead of everyone else on the BXagon...

Mind you, I did tell my co-driver off for doing 90mph on the M25, so it really isn't that slow.

I used to cruise down the motorway at 85mph in a n/a17rd filled with 1/2 tonne of books from the printers. I did once get 105mph out of it (115 on the speedo) - down a private road with the number A66 on it

Up until the last few years I used K39 for my work as well.
This sometimes involved short very fast runs on m/ways, to keep appointments.
It's maximum is around 110mph and it could cruise at 90 all day, if you asked it, At those sort of speeds fuel economy dropped down to about 38 but keep it under 75 and it gives over 50, but weight in the car has little effect due to the XUD 9's excellent torque.
Unless you stick the 19n/a cam in the TD, the 19 pulls much better around town too.
67 and still rockin (but not in a chair)

Nitrous would indeed be both interesting and amusing.

But you would need a big bottle or research where you can get it refilled in France en-route.

the difference all of that will make to economy or performance is neglibible. Having under infalted tyres will do more damage to economy than eating some extra burgers and carrying enough tools to rebuild the entire car at the side of the road. I know this, my 19NA was ALWAYS loaded to the hilt with tools and crap, as anyone whose seen in the boot will testify. Difference in performance and economy versus having the boot empty, driving with all the windows closed and "sensible" driving.. came to about .5MPG difference. Which given that the old NA NEVER returned less than 62MPG isn't really any sort of issue at all.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...
