Heating oil has that effect on the Granny - but that was a mistake
A costly one if the customs & excise people dip your tank...
Not if it was a genuine mistake in a petrol Granada which I suspect it must have been to cause the smoke.

It was very low on petrol so I grabbed a can from the garage - gave it a quick sniff - it definitely wasn't diesel so I poured it in. As the last dregs were dribbling into the tank I had the thought that something didn't smell right - literally.

Next job was a drive to the petrol station to stuff some more petrol in and make it somewhat less smokey. It probably cleaned out some crud hence the smoke.

I've used up to 30% heating oil in the BX diesel once - made no difference at all !

Well the reason it made no difference, is because heating oil, is more commonly known as red diesel! :) That's why HM tax inspector tend to get pissy when you put it in a car. I'm not innocent of that, but I wouldn't dare do that nowadays...

Yep Heating Oil is just diesel, and i'm not innocent of it neither but it's a crushed car nowadays so a total no no.

That's interesting, the most I've put in, in one go is 10 litres and had no visible blue smoke.
10 litres of oil  Was it mineral oil from a diesel? I find that it clogs up the fuel filter unfortunately, so perhaps just adding 1 litre to tank might be better?

I've found diesel oil it clogs up the fuel gauge sender - there is a small hole to restrict the flow of fuel moving the float rapidly which can block. So I use the diesel oil as a rust preventative, and the petrol oil as 'fuel' (actually running on gas the oil stays a lot cleaner so looks almost new when changed).

I've heard that about LPG'd cars, so i've only got dirty diesel oil to re-use, hence the lovely smoke  I've got plenty spare if you want a smokey car
