Well, I've just returned from inspecting the car. It started and although it's very short of LHM eventually rose. The engine sounded OK if a little tappety. No smoke or untoward noises. The HPPump was a bit noisy but that was because it was very low on LHM and once on standard height setting (it had been left in high) the noise went away. It has an MOT until January 2007, but the tax ran out in August. I would have driven it around but it had a flat.
I noticed it had a very new looking carb, alternator and the hoses all seemed OK. The front wiper needs replacing and I think somebody's had a rummage through and taken the washer bottles!
It needs a new driver's door mirror unit, but cosmetically it's very straight.
I didn't check electrics as my main concerns were:
A: a slightly blowing exhaust (sounded like it came from under the driver's seat area, so hopefully not the downpipe).
B: The clutch pedal was well up in the air, but still operated the cluch and I was able to snick it through the gears OK (felt quite good actually). But (an auto man as I am these days) I don't know if the clutch is adjusted to its maximum and will need changing...
C: It has a hydraulic leak but we don't know where from yet.
So, what to do? I have asked the guy in the workshop to give me a price to attend to all but the exhaust and get it on the road in a fit state. I will then decide.
If I decline this opportunity, is there anybody else interested?

MOT`d and running? No question that`s way, way too good to pass on Philip. I honestly think you`d be mad to pass it over. Ian (Fearn) told me about exhaust expenses but I believe he mentioned some pattern parts and it seems Dean knows of how to obtain bits too.
I really would go for it: if the exhaust isn`t too bad and the leak is fixable I`d run it like it is (with leak fixed of course) for a while and `sound out` the mechanicals and anything else that might need attention and weigh the costs up.
I`d imagine if there is any problems with the transfer box then there will be a noise going into high/low ranges, it won`t select at all or the car won`t move along full stop. If this is the case (and there`s plenty more people with greater knowledge of the 4x4 than me) then it should be pretty easy to find out from test drive etc.
I would absolutely love to own the car but it`s probably too much for me right now.
However if it`s running and tested and you can`t be arsed with it anymore then I may well be in a better position in a couple of months time if you tired of it.
Having said that I`m sure one or two of our gang would rip your hands off if you decided against keeping it.

I'll let you know my decision.
I also am a bit worried about the rear arm bearings... not that I've checked them but as other things are indicating that this is a car that has been given up as too much hassle/uneconomical to run, there is a chance they'll be well worn. And with a driveshaft running through the rears, surely that's a bu***r to do?
Oh, I don't know. I'll sleep on it.

Just out of interest, what happened when fuel went unleaded, this was the reason my dad got rid of his GTI, he says the head has to be changed and wasn't impressed with LRP, not having owned a petrol car since 97/98 it's not something i'm up on, does running on unleaded cause problems? Maybe you could find out if it's been converted?
