We sell easily 2 diesels to every one petrol car sold, including the smaller ones aswell.
Anyone going to save this?

I have a choice of car within the VW range up to a certain value and I run diesels through choice, even though I dont pay fuel I do alot of shortish journeys and still average over 40mpg from a 2.0TDI with over 160bhp which will cruise easily at 120 (in controlled condition sof course
) . I had a 1.6 in the summer which struggled to do 30 and was painfully slwo in comaprison.

Its surprised me for some years now that anyone buys a petrol car - except perhaps some of the specialist ones.
Just about everyone grumbles about the cost of fuel - yet many seem happy to pay 1/3 more by having petrol cars - and it doesn't look as though there are any technical breakthroughs on the horizon which are going to make any d- as high pressure petrol injection (straight into the combustion chamber rather than the manifold) seems to have died through lack of interest.
Having said that the Sunday Times did try to see if the fuel consumption figures for the C1 were genuine and achievable and found driving round the M25 that the petrol was marginally better but that was at 55 MPH which is hardly typical conditions.

I`d always shied away from diesels because I knew there`d be no going back once I got used to the economy.
Now despite having owned a petrol car recently even the extra speed doesn`t make much difference because of all the cash-cams about as you don`t want to get caught and have 3 points on your licence.
I`m probably going to buy a 2 litre Frontera though as won`t be used that much and will be ideal for towing. I`ve weighed up Discovery diesels as they`ve dropped into my price range but from what people say they`re too high maintenance.

Vw do do a direct injection petrol engine called the FSi (fuel stratified injection) which is marginally better than a standard petrol engine but is still a good 10-12mpg worse than its equivilent diesel which uses the same technology bu is called PD pump duse in german, direct pump I think!jeremy wrote:Its surprised me for some years now that anyone buys a petrol car - except perhaps some of the specialist ones.

Cavmad I know you love Vauxhalls but I think your a bit bonkers driving a 2.0 Frontera there woefully slow, 2.08v petrol in a car weighing alot, poor to drive and wouldnt pull the skin of a rice pudding, a Discovery Tdi would be a much better bet in my opinion, two of our mechanics drive them as they say there easy to work on and reliable?

I actually like the Landies Tim but servicing and repairs seem to take on nightmare proportions.
The Frontera has the benefit of the world`s best eight valve engine, Vauxhall reliability and cheapness of parts which appeal to me.
Appreciate what you said though mate, I need to find a Frontera and have a drive of it before I make my mind up I think.

I'm not an enormous fan of Frontera's but everything Billy says is true.
They are slow but if you're after a 4x4 that can tow and your not bothered about owning the best 4x4xfar then the Frontera makes financial sense.
Sensible money avoids the 2.3 diesel models but the 2.8 TD Izuzu engine is well worth a punt.
I've never been bothered about badges, i'm cool enough already
Yeah right!

Careful mate...my mate used to work in the factory that made the radiators.....he likes a beer or two so you may have a Salvador Dali in there if you're lucky....The Frontera has the benefit of the world`s best eight valve engine, Vauxhall reliability and cheapness of parts which appeal to me.

Funny Cavmad, I had a Frontera 2.4 petrol the other day, a woman had a council sticker on as it had just run out of tax, she panicked and asked us to take it away..It was just round the corner of our garage. The car had a new clutch (ONLY £298 parts and labour) and new steering rack...I sold it quickly to a trade contact. The fuel pump was gone and thats it. I didn't want to get involved but it was a nice enough looking car and well maintained.. Funny that you can get something like that for nought but you can also pay the earth for something if its the right make and model..I keep buying CX's even though I know financially they don't make too much sense..
Anyway back on topic the 16TRS Auto is a bit too juicy for me at the mo so i'll have a stab at this. I've got a brand new octopus in the box and a set of tyres too.
