Well, it turns out to have been not quite as tempting as described. There were a few holes in it's history that meant some biggish expense (cambelt, rear arm bearings etc.), one of the wing mirrors was smashed (OK the guy did say I could take off some money for that) and there was rust in the boot floor (again in fairness, the guy couldn't have been expected to know that really) but add to that some obvious flaws in the bodywork (a dent here, a scrape there and some lifting of paint) and a cracked front bumper with some missing trim... and you have a cummulative result that it wasn't worth the money I had, rolled up and ready in my pocket...
However, it seemed mechanically sweet, and the suspension rose and fell well, with not much ticking, wasn't dropping oil or LHM - as far as I could tell, so if you want a TXD turbo that would benefit from some hands-on work etc. I can still recommend it. But I wouldn't go much beyond £220...
It is 15 years old tho mate and for £200 you dont get much these days, if its runs and drives ok it sounds a bargain, your GTi and TXD phil is a cut above most Bxs so you can compare most cars to it.
Oh, I know but the attitude of the seller was annoying. It looked great in the pics but every panel had it's scars - the rear offside bumper was well bashed in and the wing mirror smashed. There was a damaged spat on the rear and the front bumper was cracked. The rear tyres were pretty crap and the paperwork seemed a bit odd... All this should have been mentioned - if not in the listing - certainly in the e-mails that passed between us and the phonecalls...
He's pissed off with me cos I retracted my bid. And then another bidder did.
For someone else it could prove the ideal BX. Just not me. Not today.
NB: He would have taken £270 and I guess I can't say that was a rip-off. It's just not what I was expecting.
I should ask... if anyone else is seriously considering - his reserve is £175 - grab yourself a bargain!
Yes, but the pics show it in a very good light. I have no doubt it could be made great with some tlc and replacement bumper etc... Just not for me, that's all. I would urge anyone who fancies the idea to take a bid. He'll sell over £175 (assuming no-one else bids). That's good...
Whoops, I didn't read the second page of the thread
Thing is, if its mechanicals are good then thats all it needs really. In fairness, most people will use a derv BX as a car to commute daily in, not something to show off. Depends what you want it for I guess.
No need for him to get arsey though Phil, he should have described it better in the first place.
I sometimes wonder if people deliberately don`t list all the faults on the basis they think if you complain they`ll say you should have either asked or come to view before end of listing.
Exactly Billy. He can't assume any buyer will expect it to have undescribed faults just because it's a cheap old BX... Imagine if someone won it. Travelled 100 miles to pick it up and...
Anyway, he's learning eBay. So I'm not really upset.
As I say. Mechanically seemed fine. I didn't drive it, but started up and rose up like a good'un.
