What bits need doing for servicing a 1.7 TZD?

Sorry Guys, back again, i have now purchased all the things i need, just want to double check, the fuel filter only needs doing every year/or 12k is that correct? If it is then i dont need to do it for another 6k, hurrah....

I still need to bleed out any water from the fuel filter though dont i? & i take it i leave the filter in place, i dont need to remove it on order to get rid of the water? How do i remove the water, do i turn the screw on the filter housing or just pull on it?

Do i need to prime the fuel filter or is that only if i remove the filter?

& last but by no means least, how much oil do i need to put back into the car once its fully drained (new oil filter would have been fitted)? & how long should i leave it before checking the level?

Water in fuel filter - I'd be surprised if there was any - but if you have the black filter bowl in the middle of the engine there should be a bit of pipe hanging down from the drain point - undo the drain point, collect the fuel coming out in a jar and look at it to see if there is water in it. If there is - keep going until its all out. You may need a few pumps on the priming bulb when you've finished.

The metal can filter may have a plastic screw in the bottom - same thing - loosen it and examine what comes out . . . .

Diesel oil capacity with a new filter is about 5 litres. Its nice to prime the system before starting the engine. Find the stop lever on the pump and fasten it across (with something jammed in the mechanism or an assistant), and then wind the engine on the starter till the oil light goes out - which means you will have filled the filter before the engine fires and oil is available for the bearings. Another way to do it is simply to try and start it a few times without using the heater plugs or to disconnect the stop solenoid terminal (make sure the wire doesn't touch anything metal)

Thanks for the advice Jeremy, typically unstraightforward for us newbie mechanic types. Once weather has gotten a bit nicer i will have a go at doing my 1st ever service, well oil & filter change anyway.

I was going to service the car today, but realised i didnt have the right size sump drain key/bolt, does anyone know what size i need? & is it a square one or hex, i couldnt tell with all the oil & muck on it.

Its usually a 6mm square thing Mulley, and possibly with a hexagon on the outside for good measure, possibly 21mm the bit that goes through doorhandles is apparently the right size though your factor will probably have one to fit in a socket, replace the sump plug copper washer, or at least re-use the one that should be in there, when the filter comes off, make sure the big rubber O ring comes off too (look at the business end of yor new filter) fill her up (4.5/5.0 litres) and bobs etc.

I've got a replacement copper washer, is it only 6mm? i tried some big hex keys & i'm sure one that was 10mm fitted easily inside it?

Just tried a 10 & 11mm key, both too big, i obviously cant measure. I will try a 6mm that u suggested Stewart....

Couldnt find a 6mm one, so have purchased an 8mm one, once it stops peeing it down i will check to see if this one fits ok, 3rd time lucky....

If you're lucky, the drive end of a 1/4" drive ratchet, or extension, might fit!

Don't forget to put the drain plug BACK IN again, before you start refilling with fresh oil!!!

No worries there then, i did put it back with a nice fresh washer on as well. The oil that came out was jet black, is that a normal colour for 6k worth of driving?
