I can testify to those modern diesels being blinkin fast, once they run out of puff you can normally get past them in a high performance petrol car, but it does take some effort nonetheless. Mind u Tim, your car had 160bhp when new, i wonder how much it has now????

160bhp at 6500 rpm tho! I dunno would be interesting to see, I would imagine its about 120-130now, which is ok.

I was raced off the lights the other nights by a VW Caravelle!!! (one of the new ones I hasten to add) Eventually he ran out of gear (I realised he was having a go when I was at about 1750 in second and didn't lose him until I was at 6000 in second) but he kept up with me for quite a while...

get it dyno'd! Mine runs 172BHP at 6900RPM and theres not a cat in hells chance I'd let some gimp in a Vauxhall burn me. I'd take even more delight burning him in the TD, all within speed limits and conditions of course.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Bear in mind its a dealer who is selling the car, into the price will be some form of mark up for overheads (and labour at £££££/hr) in preparing the car prior to sale and there will of course be some comeback against a dealer that you would not get against a private seller - whilst the car is more money than I have to spend, its still cheap for a dealer sourced diesel estate with a year (at least) of motoring.
Even dead dog estates seem to be going for over £100 - which is more than scrap value.
I wonder what history is with the car?

Some gimp in a Vauxhall, hey Mr Chevron?

Tim, new cars are much faster now as you`ve said. Having said that my mate has an `04 plate Astra 1.7TD and my newly acquired `96 2.0 petrol Galaxy showed him a clean pair of heels the other night when I drove it back!

Actually I think mine has an Improbability Drive - and getting more and more improbable...

Modern deisels are mega quick these days. Even ones with average 0-60 times can outperform high performance petrols on a 50-70 etc. The reason for this is cumbersome gearchanges at the lower speeds have to be udertaken more as soon as the engine runs out of revs and it can be hard to judge. Also, most of them are torque limited in first gear, sometimes second too. A mate has a Seat Ibiza Tdi with 130 BHP and bags of torque. Official 0-60 is 9.1 seconds. We tested it and it did it in 8.2, but the 50- 70 time is almost a second quicker that a BX 16V through the gears.

It seems that high performance engines can suffer a dramatic power loss as they get older with high miles, but simple engines always put out their as new power. Ive tested every car I have owned on one occasion to see if it could perform as per original figures. They all have done, and theyve all been fairly low tech engines. My Dyane had a quoted 0-60 time of 31 seconds, I could do it in 19 seconds and it would do a steady 85 on the motorway if you wanted, rather than the stated 70.

I'm so sorry. I laughed like an idiot when I read that.

My block-of-flats-on-wheels (otherwise known as a C25D panel van) has a quoted 0-60 time of 24 seconds! (and does it in about 26 as I refuse to force the gearbox into fast changes)
this might be a signature

Lol I can still get to 60 in about 8 seconds in the Sd1, not bad for a 28 year old motor!

Cheers Doc!

Good idea about a race, could be fun though to be fair to Tim I wouldn`t want to thrash his SD1.
I`m prepared to race you or anyone else mate in my Frontera. I`ll guarantee that I`ll lose but what the hell, it`d be a laugh!

I had a run up into darkest lancs today, I decided to use the Hooligan as it needed a run out, It seemed to surprise quite a lot of assorted teutonic uberwagons   :D
