Explains why some borderline vehicles pass when they get the COFs done around here. The testing stations are no higher than 300mtrs above sea level

went and saw that car. can't tell if t's been hot eally. fr some reason i thought it was a turbo one but it's not. didn't smoke bugger all, needs a raditor which is a different style to the ones I have (same as a 1.9 8 petrol bx though....) he reckoned he ran up the back of a mitsi, then the collant evel light came on jsut down the road so he left it there til the next day. filled it with water then cruised home (about 4km topsin little traffic and only a coupld of smaller hills) then shut it down when he got home, which was jsut when the coolant light came on again. I'd like to trust im that it didnt get hot...... it's a bit of a roughy but has mint interior, and would be an epic summer car for lack of running costs. i'm terrified it's crack a head or something though, although, aside of a park light, bumper, and radiator, all it needs is one headamp adjuster and a set of bonnet hinges, or the current ones striaghtening, and the lhs guard pulling straight, and the bumper iron pulling straight. hmmmmm
if i got it for $400 id be on a winner i reckon

Really? How bizarre! Even easier to get through if you're having trouble though, just turn down the fuelling until visible smoking stops...kiwi wrote: I got to admit I had a little bit of a chuckle as I read your reply![]()
Let me tell you about the last WOF emission test. It basically is start the car couple of blips on the accelerator...any undue smoke...nope then thats ok. It is a visual test there is no standard that says a electronic measuring device is needed to check the emissions of a vehicle.

I would trust CaMs instincts on this as he has spoken to the owner and seen the car. Knows the location and if he does his research right will be able to sus it out.mat_fenwick wrote:How does he know if it's not got hot? I doubt whether it has a temperature gauge, and the temperature warning lights (not the low coolant light) are apparently too late to always warn you...
Heck I paid nearly $1000 for a none starting BX eighteen months ago. Everyone was saying the engine would be shagged after the guy dump parts of the spark plug in the cylinder. head removal
This guy wants $700 the tyres alone are worth $400 and theres a few bits and pieces that would esily make up any loss via Trademe parts selling.

Instint is probably all you can go on in this case, no chance of checking for excessive pressurisation with a leaking rad! Just that I'm always cynical about people's claims when they're trying to sell a vehicle...
If he gets it for a fair price, and it isn't damaged by the lack of cooling then all well and good.
I think I saw $700 and read it subconsiously as £700 which perhaps explains my caution!

Then why go to all that trouble to fudge through a test when a fix will cure the problem and also make you look like a responsible caring motorist who does not make other road users choke on the crap left behind your diesel belcher? or any vehicle thats practically on its last legs.

Very true but thats the risk of any second hand unknown car really. Fair price the way I look at is if it is less than insured value then its a fair price. Then again some people like to pay f all for something they know is worth something and like the start of this thread some people simply place to high a value on something thats worth less.mat_fenwick wrote: Just that I'm always cynical about people's claims when they're trying to sell a vehicle...
If he gets it for a fair price
Compared to the BX at the start of this thread I would probably say the risk of buying a dog in this diesel is far less. Couple of reasons really!
The BX Auto at Horopito dont look like is has started in many a moon, it has been stored outside exposed to the elements, it has not be registered for road use in nearly 3 years (thats a big clue) and Horopito is a car graveyard. At least the diesel is road legal for at least 3 months and judging by what I have heard and found out has been looked after.

I've spent all weekend thinking about this and I'm still not sure..... I drove 500miles in my toyota over the weekend (wellington to new plymouth, buggered around up there for a few miles then came back last night) and thought, heck, if this was a bx diesel it wouldn't have cost nearly half a weeks wages in fuel.... but then again, having more weekends free of having to do ANYHTING would be good. I'm constantly worrying that I should be working on my cars. (I have six)
could be an reasonably easy way to make a few bucks, though. hmm..
kiwi, do you have a spare radiator for a bx with a filler neck? the turbo diesel on I have (this isn't a turbo diesel car..... i didn't realise til i actually went and saw it) requires a seperate header tank from which to fill the system, like a pug 205.
I may wait a while though, as my girlfriend's sister is looking to sell her tidy ax diesel soonish which could be a bit of a laugh. I really don't need ither, though, to be honest so i should try and eliminate other projects first!
