Breaking down on the M1 in a cloud of smoke and calling some local breakdown company + Fecking expensive, remember jackson you cant tow a BX the same as a normal car, if the engines not running you have no suspension or brakes.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

True, and I'm not suggesting that it's always the best way. Just that if I added up £35 for the years I've been driving without needing recovery, I'm sure that would cover a tow. Also, 90% of my driving is outside mobile coverage, so even if I did have cover chances are I'd be stuffed, so I have to be a bit self sufficient!
If your engine does ever cut out, it may be an idea to leave it in gear as you slow down, and put the suspension on high. That way if you do need recovery, there's less chance of it being too low to get on a flatbed. Of course you're buggered if you put it in low by mistake...

I've had the hydraulics fail on the M6 and when I did get recovered there was a lot of scraping and I lost the splitter.

You's takes your chances guy's. I can fully understand not bothering with breakdown recovery. A mate of mine did this, until his shitty old sierra broke down twice within a few months, erm how does £500+ sound not including the garage repair bills. I think that i'll stick to having cover @ £35 for the year, just incase, i dont have that sort of disposable income, especially when driving old cars. It's only the equivalent of just over half a tank of diesel. You wouldnt risk trying to drive 400 miles on a genuine half tank of diesel, now that's risk taking

Unlikely to have AC otherwise it would've been noted: But even if it did it's not all plain sailing as it used R12 gas which isn't legal now. Alternatives are not brilliant and conversion is not that easy - or cheap AFAIK.

Oh aye, sod not having breakdown cover either. If nothing else it's piece of mind and woth every single penny even if you only use it once.
Try breaking down on a motorway with no cover and see what it'll cost you, you'll be gobsmacked by the charges.

The RAC have saved my bacon more times than I care to remember. The last time I broke down in the middle of the road at VERY busy set of traffic lights in a Transit van and my daughter was with me.
