The thing to remember is that if you were considering a BX as a daily runner, to make this particular GT in any way reliable is going to cost a lot of money or time or possibly both. It'll probably need a re-pipe and a shed load of welding for starters.
I can sympathise with you though Ian
I'm sure something will turn up.

1984 Citroen BX 16TRS restored and now with fully functional power steering..!
1994 Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD SX (Jan 1994, no airbags but antisink fitted)
lol..oh dear what have I started?! All I wanted was to ensure that it didn’t get cubed or at the very least we got some useful parts of it first!!
I think really what Matt H said better to Richard* than the crusher and from what some of you are saying he gets rid quickly too, but not to a scrap yard. So I don’t know certainly the cars got a reprieve anyway.
I defo agree with Matt H’s latter post too, I’m no mechanic but from experience mk 1 bxs can be a real <ahem> and yes they do take serious money to get right for them to be reliable. Mine is tetchy, broke twice in 400 miles and visibly shrunk last winter. So if anyone is reading this then be under no false illusions. As for this one there’s visible rust on the wheel arch bottoms, rear quarters and something odd about the passenger door...who knows what’s underneath? After you’ve cut all the rot out you’d need to respray it and then there’s the more routine stuff with it being stood for so long; belts, tyres, height correctors, callipers...
In their defence I have to say when they work....superb. But I wouldn’t want this one/another, I guess that’s a sticking point too; how many would actually have bought this?
Actually I have met Richard and thought him ok. But I wouldn’t really say I know him; it was a few mins looking at my bx at the 2010 national and some pms over parts. I mean how well do you know anyone off a forum really? He did tell me that he really wanted a mk 1 bx specifically hence his interest in mine I guess.
As for poor Dollywobbler, if I’d have known id have contacted you direct or sommat** rather than made it so general knowledge. All I can say is if you really want one you’ll get one eventually and just keep searching they really are out there; according to www.howmanyleft.co.uk ...so maybe you could advertise in the citroenian and a few classic car mags?
All I will say is that, Richard if you have bought it please post so that we know for sure!! Otherwise I’m going to think that a GT is off to meet its maker...with those rear quarter lights still attatched
*just occurred to me we are all presuming its the same Richard! lol...
** to get you all used to the language up north before the ICCCR

The answer is no, not really, the doors on MK1's do seem to rust more than Mk2, and of course Mk1 wings (frot and rear) do differ from Mk2 models so are harder to come buy but as the youngest BX is over 17 years old now so even a "late" one could be rotten.Dollywobbler wrote:To be honest, is a Mk1 really that much worse than a Mk2? They all rot - just the later ones haven't had quite as long to do so.

I think everyone\'s missing the point here. He has a silver Digit (basically a 19GT with a funny dash and a crap spoiler) which I believe is rusty. He now owns a silver 19GT of the same vintage.
Join the dots people. I\'ve never met him, he may be a sound bloke. But there is a hell of a lot of trading going on. If he wants to do it and puts the hours in, fine. But he is going to nark people off who are potentially more of an enthusiast than himself who don\'t ever seem to get in there first.
In this case, for £500 he\'s welcome to it! I like GT\'s, but they\'re worth dick all. I bought one a few years back for £156 with 8 months tax on it
And it was the best colour they did them in (no idea what it\'s called, but its the car I gave to my dad!)
The only time I\'ll get the hump with him is when the Digit appears on eBay with the intention of making a profit. If I\'d taken it, that wouldn\'t happen, but like I said, I never got the chance (sour grapes anyone?!)

my italian mk1 has been in the uk since the late 90's, and is still a rot free car!! i have never had to weld her, doors, wings, pillar posts, windsreen area are all rust free, ok, may have a few dings!! (not by me!!) it seems to me that a bx will either rot, or it won't!!
the heater hose is now fixed (what a saga! hose is unavailable) and is being mot'd in the morning

I really doubt that 'the owner' of the Digit/GT has got the stamina/skills to do any 're-shelling' this year or any other one. That is an enormous amount of work and he's more like an old lady out shopping, dragging his trailer around with him before anyone else can get there, accumulating, than 'an enthusiast' actually cherishing/getting his hands dirty. None of these aquisitions are dry-stored either. I think once the novelty of owning these vehicles has worn off, they'll be available for sale. And he can hardly turn a profit as these are practically worthless in terms of classic cars.
The main issue with the Mk.1s are the non-coated pipes and their decay but then if the car's been looked after and garaged these could be Ok.
what was the solution then?the heater hose is now fixed (what a saga! hose is unavailable)

the heater hose came from citroen, but for the later Bx's (this hose too is now no longer available) and was not quite long enough,my machanic said he had to "sleeve" it, but seems to have worked, she went through her mot today, only failing on a split gaiter on steering rack, and No rust issues!! sophie lives again, just need to find the dam money to tax her!!

Seriously? Shit man, you of all people should wind your neck in!Roverman wrote: FFS!Richard we all know your reading this, isnt about time you let someone else a turn? I would have thought being such a BX enthusiast and this being THE club for such people you wouldnt try and piss everyone off!
As i neither have the time nor patience to read the entire thread, all i will say is there doesn't appear to be any evidence that it is the correct Richard.
Those that aren't on the "holier than thou" bandwagon (like me) don't really care who buys the damn cars if we can't afford to ourselves, at least there's the chance we might get a shot when they re-surface in a couple of years when someone else has spent a few quid ironing the creases out...
As for monopolising the market... how many would have a field full of BX's if they had the space/time/money... i know i would and so the hell would you Tim so stop leading the hate mob. It is rather pathetic...
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Cant say im not surprised by your reply Jay, i guess ive got off lightly since the incident with the GT advert last year. As you havent read the previous posts and been absent from the froum as of late (as you havent the time etc) then I think you ill informed to whats gone on, carry on using me as target practice if you like, im thick skinned. Although when I have bought and sold cars previously in the past I do recall being lambasted by various individuals yourself included.JayW wrote:As for monopolising the market... how many would have a field full of BX's if they had the space/time/money... i know i would and so the hell would you Tim so stop leading the hate mob.
