In my last job dead flat batteries were a common problem. Easiest way to kick them into life is to charge in parallel with another similar size battery .most of the modern chargers wont charge a dead flat battery the electronics see it as not connected .

Certain batteries can die if they are transported at an extreme angle for any amount of time. I had a fantastic battery once for starting cars. It was a massive BMW one given to me by a friend who got it new from a battery company. After pivoting it to get into a CX, it only just started by BX TZD at the time.

Cannot understand that... s/m batteries put up with angles of heel of 45 degrees and surfacing bow up 35 degrees. The lead acid batteries in my Porsche race cars suffered very considerable G forces..... If it had been an old battery with crap in the bottom I could maybe understand....

It was old but never used. It was odd. Once it had been into the CX at this angle, and started it successfully, it would then only just start the BX TD..It was odd. It would always start without even turning the engine over once..It caught on one cylinder and the engine would spring into life making no starting sound, but you had to make sure to floor the accelerator and press the clutch in for luck! It went on for weeks like that.

I presume your cx was a petrol? If it was, the cold cranking amps if they were low on that battery would be fine for the cx, but on a diesel it would be difficult to start, that's why diesel batteries are so bloomin expensive :(

Thats a good point Mulley, but at the time I assumed it would be fine as it was an OEM BMW 740 or M5 battery (or something of that ilk,), and In assumed, perhaps wrongly that the cranking amps would be similiar if not more than a 1.7 litre TD battery. It certainly was bigger in size, but I guess size isn't everything :D The odd thing was that it worked fine for the BX for a long while, until it had been in the CX. Having said that, this particular CX, I gave up on before even getting it anywhere near road ready, partly because of rust, and partly becausee the cranking amps on that were even more due to a stiff engine..Either that or a dodgy starter motor. I think the former as the the wires got hot -- Actually, ^^ What was I thinking, it must have been that that killed the battery.
