Remember, the slider's not rocket science - it's just a cylinder with grooves either end to hold the boots in place. With the caliper bolts off, the only thing retaining it is the boots/gaiters. Once the boots are prised off the groove and out of the caliper, there's nothing else to keep it in place - in normal circumstances. BUT be aware that the boots are intended to be fitted once, though - prising them off will almost certainly damage them, which is why any manual advises fitting new ones. A damaged boot doesn't do the job.
What you sprayed probably dissolved any grease left on the mating surfaces of pin and caliper. Metal sliding on metal needs lubrication (think engines). The boots, like all boots, are there to keep lubricant in and keep crud and moisture out, which they've probably not been doing for a while now.
See if the slider repair kit - "kit de colonnnettes" - is still available (slider, boots, grease sachet, etc) - the part number was 95 590 797 at one times, but may well have have changed.
Of course it's no good to you if there's damage to the inside surface of the part of caliper which the pin slides on, which is why a new, recon, or good secondhand caliper is your best bet.
Hang on to the old caliper, if it's not needed as an exchange unit. It could prove useful for problems like this one in the future....

Considering the price and unpredictibility of getting a slider kit and attempting a repair I'm probably better off getting a new caliper, unfortunately I'm rather short on funds at the moment so It may have to wait until I can source a secondhand or scrap caliper.
Realistically, I won't even be driving much longer due to going to university as I can't afford to insure or tax the BX again for over 3 years. I'll probably keep onto it until the tax ends but it's going to have to go inevitably just haven't decided when.
