Nobody can stop you doing what you like but I wouldn't go pulling the head off a notoriously fragile engine (Risk, time money aggravation,) without that I had done a compression test first. My own tester is old and somewhere (?!) in the shed but you are welcome to borrow it if you haven't your own.

That would be very helpful Tom, thanks. I might look into buying one anyway. I wasn't going to pull the head off without doing some sort of test, but I'm being given mixed reviews about whether a compression test will show up any faults. I thought it would, seeing as only a compression leak can cause it to boil surely?

Lots of other things can make it boil Kitch, just think about it. poor circulation in any area will do that so blocked rad, air lock, duff pump

Compression loss will blow cas into the block. that is what stops circulation in that case. I reckon that a test will allow you to be specific about your diagnosis. There is nothing better than knowing for sure that it is duff before you pull it apart and nothing* worse than finding out that time and money have failed to cure a fault that wasn't there.

*except of course being eaten by a walrus.
