I'm sure Mat's observation is spot-on. Having said that, this doesn't stop the ravages of time and cars like mine are most likely going to end up getting cubed, because their owners don't have the money or the welding skills to keep them going. I think there is very little doubt that 90% of BXs in the same condition as mine would end up as donor cars and/or sold for scrap, so the total number of roadworthy cars is inevitably going to keep on declining. It's increasingly about how much is salvaged from the scrappers - I think that sourcing key parts to replace one that are worn out is going to get increasingly difficult as time goes by and this is bound to have an impact. Of course, there's plenty of people around with the ingenuity and the engineering skill to get round these issues, but inevitably it's going to cost more money.

For the record, this looks like a nice car, but my thoughts on autoboxes are already on record and I agree with Sweet 16 (valve) - better to wait for a car of the right spec to come along - I certainly wouldn't recommend an auto to someone who wants a manual. Diesel v petrol is another hotly-contested bone of contention, but I would agree that condition out-trumps trim level and within reason the engine spec. Decent valvers are thin on the ground so Sweet 16 (valve) is going to have to be patient if that is the BX model he wants. I think Tim's point assumes an appreciation of the BX from a design PoV rather than what's under the bonnet and my guess is that the majority of people on the forum are of the same mind. We all have our preferences but it's the fab suspension, unique design and Citroen-ness of the BX that form the core attraction. Why else spend ridiculous amounts of money on a 20+ year-old car?

Daniel B on the 16v forum was selling his valver, it's been modded but could be returned to stock and is in good condition. Needs some fettling as it won't start at the moment.

I do worry about how long I can keep running BXs as daily transport. Cars deteriorate through use and it can become a hell of a job to keep up with it all. Given that I'm also running a 2CV as daily transport, I fear there is going to come a time when I give in and get something boring to replace the BX. As BXs get rarer, parts will do likewise, which means they'll probably get more expensive too.

Sorry, I'm in a right miserable mood this week!

I don't think that's miserable Ian, but right on the money. I've had similar thoughts myself. I think realistically I can only run the TGD as an everyday car for another couple of years max. Infact, I've already considered getting something cheap and not so cheerful as a runabout. At least I'll be able to console myself with the following fact; if it gets twatted by some idiot in a supermarket car park . . . so what!

I'd be rather gutted if i couldn't run a bx daily, if it came to that i might not be bothered with the expense of just having a car to go to the odd show now & again.

Hi guys. I think when BX's move out of the 'cheap daily' bracket then the cars will definitely be a real rarity. I'm used to having an older car (78 beetle which is classed as new to 'the scene') as a weekend toy, and that is what I'd see a 16v as - a toy, and nothing more than that. The car world, especially the BX world is quite a small one. There's a lot more old beetles around than there are BX's and very few of those are used as dailys. When BXs move from dailys to 'toys' then the value will go up. By that stage there will probably be less than 500 on the roads.

Always hold out for the right car imho, it will be along some time as you know if you buy a middle-of-the-road version like this one, within a couple of weeks your dream BX (lol, there shouldn't be such a thing!) will be along...

There's significantly less than 500 on the roads now. In fact there's significantly less than 50 on the roads now. :D

Please could you post up the link to it? Is it the one without the engine in it? I must admit I'm really not after another project at the mo!

Cheers

..that_

If there's less than 50 valvers around, you are going to have to be very patient and be prepared to pay a premium.

I think if you're so set on a valver, you should consider asking around on the 16v forum. link here

If what you really want is a valver and don't want to hang around - as others have suggested you could be in for a long wait - have you considered importing a left-hooker from France? There's currently quite a few doing the rounds on Leboncoin (including some lovely 'sports'). That's were I'd be looking if a valver was my hearts desire! I think the left-hookers with French badging have a bit of continental chic AND you get an extra glove-box as well! 8) This looks nice for instance;
