Re: Dollywobbler's 17TXD Turbo
I still haven't really put the tyres to the test. If we get a LOT of snow overnight as forecast, I might see if I can get off the driveway. That's the big test. Then again, I might just sit near the fire instead...

They're tyres - not magic carpets lol! I imagine 4WD is what would be needed if it got really bad.

4WD is no magic carpet either, as BMW X3 and X5 owners find out every time it snows...
Mind you, two years ago, my V8 Landy did managed to drag itself and the Green Tiger off the driveway in snow.

Hope the snow isn't too severe. Looks like it might be though.

Meh. I'm alright this time. I've no reason to be in Cardiff. We have food, wood and I've got a pile of work to be getting on with. Just hope the snow doesn't bring the phone lines down - then I WOULD be in trouble!

Talking of snow. I have Michelin Alpins on my GTi. They are now 7 years old with loads of tread left and give me great confidence in the snow of which we get a fair bit round here.
This pic, taken from my balcony is of the déneigement machine that they used last week to clear completely the drive to where I live.

It's pictures like that which make me embarrassed of our country each time we have a sprinkling!Jaba wrote:Talking of snow. I have Michelin Alpins on my GTi. They are now 7 years old with loads of tread left and give me great confidence in the snow of which we get a fair bit round here.

Yes , know what you mean Rich. Its actually the village builder who does the snow clearance. You can't do any building work below zero with a metre of snow all around. He normally just brings one of his JCBs and follows up occasionally with his giant snow blower.Kitch wrote:It's pictures like that which make me embarrassed of our country each time we have a sprinkling!
We have to pay him of course and have a contract with him so that he comes whenever there is 8cm of snow to clear.
Good luck with your snow over there btw.

Re: Dollywobbler's 17TXD Turbo
Why get embarrassed? We've had machines like that going around the village today. We've got six foot drifts in places. I went out earlier but stayed well away from the drifts - a friend had already got his 4x4 stuck in a 4ft one.
The BX just about got off my driveway after a couple of attempts. This drifting snow is really soft making traction very difficult. One side of our driveway had drifted enough for me to consider raising the ride height.
We then used a Shogun to try and rescue my friend's 4x4 but even that kept getting stuck. We freed my mate's 4x4 after walking to it, and parked it up out of the way to await a thaw or the return of the snow blower.

Do accumulators ever suddenly lose pressure? Noticed at the weekend that the pump seems to clatter almost continuously. Not for long, just a clatter----clatter----clatter. Everything is still working as it should.

Does the acc sphere have a membrane? Possible it has ruptured.

Presume so. I would expect other things to go downhill if the accumulator wasn't working at all though.

Is it possible that the freezing temperature has frozen the hydraulics?

I very much doubt it, especially as I've been doing a lot of driving since it got warmer.

Re: Dollywobbler's 17TXD Turbo
I bought a Mercedes-Benz 300E this week, which has been baffling me with a misfire. Then there's the 2CV, which is rotten and broken.
The BX has been a loyal friend so far, but the constant running of the pump suggested all was not well. So, a session was booked with Mr M Fenwick of bloody-cold-part of Wales. First step, change the accumulator. Instant improvement. Tick-time is now 20 seconds. Mat also lubed up the height corrector linkages - which has made some improvement - and bled the front brakes. This doesn't seem to have made any difference at all, but it's nice to know that every caliper has fresh LHM. The brakes certainly aren't dreadful. Maybe it's just me.
