Re: The TXD Turbo rocket

I don't think welding up a sunroof hole is as easy as it sounds. Seriously. Press the roof above the rear seat. It's ridiculously thin. That's why the Peugeot 205 boys much prefer a non-sunroof shell. There's not much mileage in buying one with a sunroof and trying to weld up the hole.

I think I'd be tempted to just run this one on the cheap until the MOT is up. Otherwise you run the risk of it turning into a project you just don't need. There's a Mk1 to consider after all. You don't want to distract your attention and funds away from that really.

..that_

At the risk of sounding too bodgy, if you're not using the sunroof anyway, I'd have a go at sealing all round it to keep the water out, using proper car body sealer for preference, and leave well alone for now. Welding a big panel into a thin flat roof will be very difficult to get right, and of course you will then have a roof lining with a hole for a sunroof that isn't there.

Get it water tight for the rest of the winter, concentrate on getting the GT sorted, then decide sometime next year whether to spend money on the TXD, keep it as a hack or find something better.

The sunroof doesn't actually leak, it's the rusty front edge where the sunroof meets the roof, you could probably poke a marshmallow through the metal in places, it's that bad. To seal it up, would I have to remove the sunroof deflector, and potentially make a very serious hole, or maybe even several :( Or cold I just whack a load of sealer under the sunroof deflector, and in front of it and leave it? Would this make a seal? There's moss and all sorts growing under there...

This sounds incredibly sensible, i'll want to do the brakes, backbox and glowplugs (maybe tyres too) though too.

Well, those things can always be easily swapped to another vehicle, so go for it. I just wouldn't worry about properly fixing anything like bodywork. I'd opt for whacking a load of sealant around the deflector for now.

Ok, some clean (ish, used for 3 days since cleaned) photo's.

Rust, holes and moss... I'll need to clean this before whacking a load on sikaflex under here.
Image

Rear mudflaps would look good I think.

Although this looks like an LHM river, the LHM seems to collect on the suspension/crossmember bits under and behind the engine, so when on a slant, the LHM drips off and makes the leak look worse than it is.
Image

It's a difficult colour to photo, and needs a polish, it's very cloudy and dirty.

I get paid on Monday, finally get some money off of euro car parts, they messed up my wages for the last two months. So the BX will be going into the garage to get the bearing/clunk noises looked at and the LHM leak. Apart from glowplugs, and sikaflex, this should be all I have to spend on it for the moment, then I can start concentrating on the GT, can't wait :)

Yes, next year if I do decide to keep it and get it sorted, that'll be coming off. I expect BX's would be very good towing cars, with the stability the suspension offers.

How's things going your end Mick? I remember that you've had a succession of car issues.

lol, well where do I start ,
was thinking of trading the Kia in for something newer but only got offerred £1,500.00 px against a mazda 5 so told the guy he had just lost a sale.
406 is going ok , still hesitates so am getting injectors cleand next week ( I hope ) ,
106 had a puncture christmas eve and I think the head gasket may be going ( beige sludge in the water).
so I have now put the Kia on Ebay and am thinking of getting another , younger 406 7 seater estate or maybe the blue 505 GTi estate on ebay at the moment.
been using my sons ford cmax of late, no wonder most of these are sold to the mobility people, slow, boring and slow are the best words to describe it ,
it even has a stupid light that comes on to tell you to change gear if you dare try to get it moving at anything more than a sedate speed.

Oh dear Mick, what awful luck! I do hope you get at least one decent working car! Lol, the bumpers aren't that good, up close they have some scuffs and a dent or two, but the chromework is good, and they are better than Sandre's

It's not bad ta Tim, has lots of little bits that i'm itching to sort. But I think if I get the LHM leak sorted (worried it's the octopus), get the bearing/grinding noise sorted, make it watertight and fix the rev counter then it will do until next summer when I can decide better what to do with it. Will it stay or will it go? Hmm genuine citroen towbar, eh?

I don't suppose you've checked the wheel bolts are tight incase that is causing the grinding noise that you've mentioned? The clonking won't be anything to do with loose wheelbolts.

I've had the drivers wheel off when it was flat, but not checked the passenger side one (the perceived noisy side). Judging by the reluctance of the drivers nuts to come off () the passengers will be just as tight :D

Though it'd be a very sweet change if it were something as simple as wheel bolts!

I wouldn't presume & i'd also check all of your wheels as quite often a sound that appears at the front of the car is coming elsewhere. Even if they are tight at least that rules out a very easy check to cross off the list of possible reasons. If it is a wheel bearing, if you get the car on jacks & physically turn the wheel by hand it should feel different to a good bearing as it wont be smooth to turn. Fingers crossed its something simple & cheap to sort :)

I've been trying to be economical on this tank to see what I can get out of it if i'm light footed, I even used shell ultimate diesel. The problem is keeping it off boost, i've found you can just toddle around at very low revs and use the low end grunt. But hills, overtaking and speed limit changes (like 30 to 60) are an issue, once the turbo spools up it's all too easy to just press a little harder, and a little harder still until you find you're at full whack, and you have a good Cheshire cat style grin going on :)

What, if anything other than temperature/weather etc would make the car smoke quite a lot one day (like today, but only on full throttle on boost) and not at all another (like yesterday). I'm just curious, it doesn't bother me, it's quite fun to give the person that's too close behind their own personal black cloud :)
