Carburettors! Last time I had the pleasures of them was at the very end of the last century. Since then, choice has been decidedly diesel. Not missing the HT and plugs, either. Or the vapour locking. Or the in-tank pumps. Or the mpg.

I hate carbs with a passion. I know they were all we had, but the move to injection took far too long, IMO. My mk1 TRS has a Weber and it drives like shit. Good for one of those, mind, but compared with the 16v it's awful. Lumpy, has a mind of its own when hot starting (though cold starting I have to admit, it's amazing!) Tweaked it and tweaked it as good as it will get, but sometimes you need electronics.

With carbs it's a bit of a roulette wheel with what you get. There are some super reliable ones, like the SU, then there are ones which cannot be adjusted or they run like shite, such as the Japanese carbs, or there are others which just din't like being, well, a carburettor.

I will say that your TRS shouldn't be lumpy and all over the place at idle. A gasket refresh and a trip to the ultrasonic bath usually helps with things, but as you say, there comes a point when injection is just better in every single way.

My TRS has a brand new carb! It idles fine, and when I say 'lumpy', I'm comparing with an injected car. For what it is, it runs well, but I just meant in general...Injection>carbs.

Wow you still have the wing/splash guard tabs intact, that rust isn't too bad at all if that's all of it, I've seen much worse on later cars.

That's all of it that the hammer can find. The sills have been done, the underside is pristine and the offside wing is in top condition.
Someone in its life has cared for it really well, to the point where they even got the A pillars cavity waxed! Mavellous.

I've used a Sip 100 migmate which is prob 40 odd yrs old, still does a good job but cuts out now and again which is annoying, I also have a no gas mig which isn't great on thin Citroen steel bottoming out at about 70amps

After driving back to college in Somerset I've discovered that I'm having problems with the stereo. A Blaupunkt Boston is currently in there, but it frequently loses reception when driving, requiring a manual retune. I've also got a lot of engine noise occasionally coming through the speakers which is probably because the Faraday cage on the bonnet isn't doing what it should.

What does the hive mind think? I'd like to not retune the radio every 5 minutes on the motorway so any suggestions are most welcome.

Does the problem occur on FM, or AM (LW/MW)?

If it’s FM then an old model of radio that predates RDS will not automatically retune into the new transmitters as you move round the country so you’ll have to manually retune which is what we all had to do back in the day.

If it’s losing stations on AM too (other than temporarily due to hills/buildings etc) then that’s a different problem. Most AM stations in England all come from one transmitter, so the frequency for each is constant.

I would add that if it is an RDS-enabled radio then you should be able to toggle the settings such that auto frequency (AF) is on for FM stations.

I'll retreive the manual from the glovebox to see if it's even got RDS at all. I'm only listening on FM. AM occasionally if I'm listening to Radio 5 Live. I can buy a slightly more up-to-date model if it doesn't.

Blaupunkt Boston did have RDS and AF but if its drifting off tune there is no cure for that.
You might just need to switch on AF to lock you onto the best signal or the aerial might be only giving a weak signal or not even plugged in properly.
Plenty of old sets on eBay to tempt you.
I have got a Blaupunkt Daytona its a POS but does the job.

I read the manual last night and there's no mention of AF or RDS at all. I have a feeling my particular model of Boston doesn't have the features at all. There's also a tone of interference from the washer pump motors and windscreen wiper motor.

I'd like to have another Bluapunkt in there so I did have a search and there are some lovely affordable ones. I may also replace the aerial for extra braces.
