possible knocking noise from back of car

Post by chriscarterstevens »

hi all,

recently, have heard a very intemittent knock/bang from the rear of my bx, which is rather worrying.

it only seems to happen when driving on rough ground or over certain bumps, also when turning right into my road, and can happen mpre often if i drive enthusiasticly.

apologies if this sounds very vague, but ive not experienced anything like this before. the suspension has had a recent overhaul as im well informed by various people on the forum, it all rises as it ahould with no groans or issues.

i have looked under the car, and the only thing i can think of it being is the area where the spare wheel sits. i think the bracket is broken as the spare wheel was in the boot when i bought the car.
the bracket does clang a bit if i rock it from side to side so thats what i thought it was.

however, roverman mentioned to me that the car might need some work to the boot floor, which i have looked at and cannot see any issues with. could this give the symptoms i am currently getting?

advice appreciated

thanks chaps

It could be the exhaust loose Chris as I know you mentioned it was blowing, also whats the rear arm bearings like?

For the rear arms bearings, check two ways. Look at the rear of the car from a swimming pools length away and see if either of the rear wheels is leaning. They will tend to lean outwards at the bottom so / \ not \ /
The other way to check is to measure (roughly) the distance between the tyres and the inner wing. If one side is shorter than the other than the bearing will be on it's way out.
As tim suggests, check exhaust and spare wheel carrier too. Highly unlikely it's anything structural - even if there is rust in the boot.

Ahh yes that a point Bandit, I remember the spare wheel carrier being a bit fubared and the wheel itself in the boot as it would hold the weight so could also be that.

It'll be the N/S arm bearing. It's fucked.

tbh its kind of like a 'clonk' noise and seems to be coming from the n/s.

the spare wheel carrier does make a noise, but i dont think thats the problem as surely that would happen all the time

im presuming the rear arm needs doing asap :?:

i have sourced one, thanks tim. however have squat all knowledge on what to do, other than take it out the box and hope it fits itself

thanks

I think I have the same problem. Let me know how it goes, I will probably have to do the same very soon. :(

Thanks.

I did the arm bearings on my 1.4 Leader many years ago and its not as bad as it sounds. Probably the hardest job is driving the old bearing shells out but stripping and rebuilding I remember being very straight forward. Much easier than a CX.
