I got these for tourist and they were brand new last month from GSF and not old stock. Think they were stamped Feb 2009.

Nope I checked them when they got delivered to make sure, they were only a month or so old.

I was under the impression that a Date Stamp is just that....and not a "negotiable" item!
If it says 10/03, then THAT is the date!!!

This certainly is confusing. I'd go by the 'factory' date stamped on the sphere personally.

So what's the shelf-life of a sphere? 2 years?

This is slightly confusing, are Amtex not the people who recharge spheres if you send your old ones to them? If they are then I suppose these have just been recharged, and are ready to go. If not, then bugger, that's sh*t.

The date stamped on them is the date they were made. If they're that old then they will have lost pressure even without use. They may still be ok though, You'll need to fit them & do the usual test proceedure to see if they're ok. Is there no chance you can take them back to gsf & let them know they are duff & get some replacements that were actually made recently rather than years ago?

Tim got them for me from a place that's presumably nowhere near to me, so taking them back is not really possible plus I don't think I have any kind of receipt.

Tim, did you check them before you got them?

I checked the front ones but didnt open the box on the rears as we didnt fit them, and they were stamped 2009. I am still of the mind you maybe have looked at the wrong no possibly as I doubt very much they have had them on the shelf for 5 years. Ive bought half a dozen amtex sets from GSF in brum in the past 3 years alone.
