Adding my daughter to my insurance

Post by ed4ferrets »

Anyone else have a provisional licence holder on their insurance? I just recently renewed my insurance only to be told Carmen wants to Learn in the BX 8). It seems I may have to cancel the current insurance as with her included it is no longer competitive. Anyone know an insurer who gives newbies (20yr old) a good deal?

Hi Ed, try the NFU Mutual Car Insurance. They used to be reasonable when my lot were learning.
All the best.

Elephant.co.uk, Tescos, Directline and compare the market (not meerkat lol) are all places to try Ed. I deal with young drivers in my line of work and above are the ones I've heard good things about.

Cheers guys, after getting some scary quotes and doing some sums it appears to be cheaper to get a budget small car and her own insurance with me as a named driver.

So the hunt is on for said small cheap car preferably local but Billy's Cinquecento is also a possibility.

Any suggestions would be welcome, also what to look out for on the various cars out there please.

I know of a 205 diesel which will be available cheap in Liverpool shortly, recent timing belt, water pump and clutch. PM me if you're interested and I shall provide the owners contact details.

You cant go far wrong with a micra tbh, boring as heck but very reliable, 106/saxos are ok but do get flakey with age and most have been thrashed by now. Polos are mechanically good but oddly enough do have a few rust issues on 94-99 models.

On a a N plate that will be the 1.9D no?, pretty much bullet proof but not as refined as a XUD, they do go well though.

It is the 1.9D. Interestingly just after I sold the 205D mentioned above, I drove the Polo for a couple of days, and I have to say found the 205 the better car; more rewarding to drive and generally a better 'package'. In terms of engines the XUD beats the VAG diesel in both the refinement and longevity stakes, and I have to say the installation of the 1.9 engine into the Polo is horrific; almost any job requires scraped knuckles and removing about three items before you can get to the part you wish to service. Access on the 205 OTOH is excellent, indeed better than on the BX, with everything under the bonnet easily accessable; I changed the clutch cable in about 15mins...

Ed
Have a look at the Trade-it website. There are a few 1.1 Fiestas that might be worth considering. Some with reasonable T & T. Also, don't forget the lower engine size, means lower tax & insurance as well as running costs.
Another source could be shop and supermarket notice boards, not that there are many in Marshfield. I'll give you a bell tonight.

In bold is the only reason not to go for diesel, regrettably it seems only newer cars have smaller diesel engines. Would love a little Aixam cabriolet though 8) Fiesta's do not appeal either unfortunately and a Metro we went to see was rusting before our eyes
