Bumper Mystery

Post by Turboalternator »

Hallo everyone!

Can any throw some light on this mytery:

As seen on ebay:

"BRAND NEW SSVG CITROEN BX FRONT BUMPER IN GREY

BLACK INSERT

NOT ESTATE OR GTI, NO FOG LAMP HOLES

FITS YEARS: AUGUST 83 > MARCH 94"

What I'd like to know is:

Why "NOT ESTATE"? Is it just because of the fog lamp holes?

I thought that all BX's (Apart from 16v) all looked the same in the front.

Link to Ebay?

Estates had the same bumper.
Only P2 16v's had different bumpers.
The actual bumper is the same regardless of foglights and spiltters.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Not estate or GTi because the seller is a clown, its probably for a Mk2 Granada and steel going by the description. If its cheap its worth a punt!

Bumper mystery

Post by Turboalternator »

Hallo Docchevron and Vanny!

Thanks for your posts guys .. I've now got another point/question:

When did Mk 2 start? I think the bumpers must have changed then and the reason I think that is because I had a shunt in Spain enroute to Morocco and when I was in Morocco I think they must have fitted a Mk1 bumper to my car as it looks really weird! That is why I want to change it now.

The ebay listing says 1983 - 1994 would that be right for Mk2?

Mystery bumper

Post by Turboalternator »

Hallo Citronut,

It was painted grey to match my car but could be red underneath. Also it was screwed to the wings -- which is all wrong I know! -- but the crafty Moroccans had used filler to cover the screws so I did not realise what they had done until I got back to the UK!

To be fair to the Moroccans they did a remarkable job considering the shunt I had and the resources that were at hand and I was very grateful for what they did overall.

However, once I have changed it for my car's correct bumper you are more than welcome to have it for free providing you pick it up.

I'll try and post a picture tomorrow but being a newbie I am not sure I know how to do that as yet but am willing to try!

Just as a pointer, a Mk1 BX would finish on a D-reg, but i believe there are one or two Mk1's on an E-reg, and equally there are D-reg Mk2's i believe (not uncommon for any car). My understanding is that the Mk2 was released in '87, and the BX was launched in '82 ('83 in the UK). So a part listed as '83 to '94 should fit ALL models of BX.

So again, if the Mk1 doesn't fit a Mk2 then the seller is spouting more lies. But in diffence, the description sounds like it is straight out of a parts catalogue, and aftermarket parts catalogues usually read like a fairy tale!

I'd expect your original front bumpers, on a 19TRS (hence 87-88ish) to be something like the car pictured here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITROEN-BX-LEFT-H ... 0331326781
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Mk2 models came out in august 1986 so there are some D plate Mk1's (I had one) and some C plate Mk2w (most Citroen demos) As Vanny says you can interchange a Mk1 and Mk2 Bumper.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Hallo RxBX, Vanny, DLM & Powerman,

All this is getting more confusing!

Take a look at this BX: (I reckon that this BX is a Mk1)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... X_Midi.jpg

The bumper on this car is identical to the bumper that was fitted to my car after my shunt and looks weird.

The bumper in DLM's post is definitely the one that I had on my car before the shunt.

I suppose they are interchangeable if you can put up this bumper looking weird on a Mk2.

Question now is whether the bumper on ebay is a Mk1 bumper or as Vanny says it's for a Mk2 Granada!

I took a picture of my car but can't upload to post -sorry guys! But, descriptively, the flair around the wheel arch does not blend in with the bumper. In DLM's post the flair can be seen to blend with the bumper.

If anyone can suggest a way I can be sure to get the bumper as shown in DLM's post when I buy from someone then I'd be grateful of their suggestion.

BX MK1's are easily spotted by having the orange indicators which are wrapped round the sides, & the wing having the cut-out to accomodate them. Compare them to a mk2 & you'll see what i mean.
