So I tested the alternator and I need a new one, a few questions then.
1) I went to my local breakers yard and was quoted £30 for a used one. Is this about right?
2) They only have alternators from 1.9 XUD engines - they told me these would be ok on the XUD7 but I need to be sure as I don't have money to waste!
Replies appreciated, as I need to know by tomorrow morning if possible.

Price sounds about right, if you've got some money back deal if it don't generate the volts! Here you pay a bit more for used alternators - I got one for a friend and that was €60. They do pop up new on Ebay but I suppose you can't wait for months til one does.
The only reason that alternator wouldn't go on your Turbo D is if you've got A/C? Otherwise I think it's the same - 50A?

The 50A alternator will go onto a TD with a/c all right, you just get through 'em quicker. The only reason that alternator wouldn't go on your Turbo D is if you've got A/C? Otherwise I think it's the same - 50A?
I'd strongly recommend getting a reconditioned alternator rather than a plain used item, as you'll have no idea of the state of the brushes etc. The old alternator may even just need the brushes replacing, which is one of the things a reputable auto-electrician will do with exchange alternators before putting them back on sale.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Thanks for the replies.
Basically my local breakers are a bit funny about cash refunds, instead they will give you a parts refund where you can get more stuff of the same value.
That's not ideal but there's nowhere else I can go that's as near ...
Seeing as I can't afford a reconditioned unit I suppose I'll have to take the risk and get a used one, unless anyone on here knows of one I could have for the right price? Doesn't have to be perfect just working?

There are quite a few listed on eBay at the moment.......dependent on BX model, of course.
This looks reasonable for a recon unit...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITROEN-BX-C15-50 ... 7C294%3A50
Just try a search under "Citroen BX alternator"...works wonders
Regards.
Edit: Sorry for the LONG URL linky.....I can't remember how to do the "shorter" version. Should be in a "Sticky" somewhere!

an N/A alternator has 4PK belt, and the TD/16valve has 5pk.
Whildt the alternators are interchangable, you'll really want to change the pulley's over.
Alas I have no alternators left in stock at all now.
The last one is on a promise.

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

As Doc observes, the pulleys are different. I've got an 80A on my TRD, not because I need the extra juice but that was what I found. That has the wider pulley but the thinner belt sits in the grooves and drives it fine. Would obviously be a problem the other way round - belt too wide for pulley!
