After David Rutherford's recent experience, one of the very first things I'd check is the auxiliary drivebelt....... before flicking the aircon switch.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Yes that sounds like a good idea!

Didn't flick it on on my way home becuase of an experience from my cx. When I bought it I had to drive it around 200 miles to my home. It was quite warm so I turned on the aircon and it instantly rewarded me with a cabin full of smoke! The damage was not anywhere near as bad as what you refer to as the ac-pumb was stuck and therefore the belt that drove it got very warm and snapped. Even though that was the only damage I didn't fancy trying it again so i kept my fingers away...

Will check the belt before I test the aircon. Thanks for the tip.

If it's factory-fitted aircon there shouldn't be any pulleys like the one which caused David's problem - there are none on mine, which has aircon transplanted from another BX.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.
