BX Spoiler

Post by scarecrow »

Does anyone know why the BX was suddenly given a spoiler? And, what might the consequences be of taking it off?

Cheers

would assume its for style only if you take it off you will have 4 holes in the boot and personally think it will look bare

There are 2 types of spoiler, the baby walker & the whaletail. Even the MK1's had a small spoiler on the edge of the bootlid which was part of the bootlid rather than being an add on unlike the 2 above.

Reason, fashion, i dont believe they offer much downforce, some members have removed the baby walker one's & no one seems to have noticed any difference.

I think it's quite a clean look without the bolt-on one (one mans meat...) - plus it obscures the rear view and makes changing the rear wiper bloomin' fiddly.

The 16v spoiler is just that, simply a spoiler. It offers no downforce, but does break up the airflow across the tail of the car, and might possibly reduce the lift generated at the back of the car. The rubber-lip GT/TRS one might also have a very small effect, but very minimal.

The baby-walker spoiler probably doesn't do anything at all. It's not an aerofoil section, and not being connected to the airflow seperation point at the back of the car doesn't effectively spoil the eddy-shedding at the back of the car. It's far more effective as a mug shelf or a beer can shelf than it is at doing anything with the airflow.

My 19TRS is minus its whale Tail so has holes along the Boot Hatch edge, That is not so bad a type to remove because you can fill and Satin Black spray the edge. I cheated I have a strip of wide black tape across it
Removing the Carry Handle would mean more work to restore the look!

Personally I like the carry handle ok so changing the rear wiper is hassle but how often do you change that?

Now another theory anyone reckon taking the whale tail off is why my TRS is more fuel economical than the TZS

Other than the holes I have not noticed any other performance changes in the BXs I have added a Carry handle to!!! So the holes have it!

Look on the brightside its a fibreglass tailgate so wont rust with holes in it

Haha - I seem to have to change the rear wiper every time I buy a BX ;-))

I thought I'd got away with it last time as the rear wiper didn't work at all. Then the front one fell off and I ended up having to rob Peter to pay Paul - in the rain, of course.

I'm now unsure whether I prefer the with or without spoiler look. I don't like the holey, leaky part much - and I just wonder if the insurance company would kick-up should I ever have to make a claim and it wasn't on the car.
