Well thank goodness for that. There was *only* the use of hand-held equipment while driving, and that's *only* been proven to be at least three times more dangerous than drink-driving.Philip Chidlow wrote:Lucky they didn't say they were all pissed.

David, you missed out the " " on my quote BTW.
Of course, you are right Constable Rutherford. We must make sure we are more careful and mindful of the law, and NEVER admit to ANYTHING (for example exceeding 70 mph on a Motorway) - even when posting on this forum.
(Not that I condone dangerous driving of course)

Nice sarcasm.Philip Chidlow wrote:Of course, you are right Constable Rutherford.
When you have a friend killed by someone texting while driving, I'll be nice and sarcastic when you get a bit annoyed to see people blatently flouting the law and putting others lives at risk.
I shan't say any more on the matter, but there's a bloody good reason why using a phone/camera/anything of that nature when driving is completely illegal. The day it is punished in the same manner as drink-driving I shall be very happy.

I sympathise and totally agree with what you say. It is appalling that people think they can be responsibly in charge of a motor vehicle whilst texting, eating chips - or IMHO smoking.
But c'mon David. You come across as a bit like 'teacher'. We are all adults here.

Philip. I fully endorse DR's comment's as my Son in law used to be (Up to Xmas 2008) a Highway's agency patrol man on the stretch of the M1 which runs thro' Derbyshire and he's personally seen and helped in clearing up the mess (I could go into explicit details of the terrible scene's that these guy's unfortunately sometime face and those of the emergency service's, but I won't !) of four fatal accident's which were a direct consequence of persons using a Mobile Telephone for texting or making a telephone call without a hands free system whilst drivingDavidRutherford wrote:Nice sarcasm.Philip Chidlow wrote:Of course, you are right Constable Rutherford.

But now he will be able to enforce the law of Mobile Telephone use whilst driving as he has just finished his training as a Police Constable at the same time with his wife (My Daughter).
They are the first married couple with the Derbyshire Police Force to have completed their training at the same time

While I agree regarding phoning/texting and eating, I don't think smoking i necessarily in the same league, as unlike the others it can be done without removing nearly as much attention from the task in hand.Philip Chidlow wrote:I sympathise and totally agree with what you say. My main pet hate is people using sat nav equipment; I have had several people preoccupied with looking at the screen nearly hit me, but no smokers as yet (perhaps tomorrow...)

....if we are going to go down the road of banning EVERY distracting action which could be taken by a driver....then radios & CD players should go too!
Seriously though......I am still annoyed to see SO many drivers, happily cruising along, in rush-hour traffic and around schools, with a mobile held to their ear. I know that commercial drivers are often cited as "main culprits", but most of ones I see every day are WOMEN, either alone or even with children in the car with them!
I would be delighted to see the law more strongly enforced!

Regarding using the phone, I find it surprising how much (for me at least!) attention is needed to have a conversation. It brought it home to me the other day, when I was phoned - I answered it on the hands free but after the call was over couldn't recall much of what I had just passed.
Regarding photo taking, is it necessarily more dangerous than changing the radio station? On my cameraphone I could slide open the lens cover and take a photo by pressing one button, which (if the road was clear) maybe would be no worse than using the radio etc. Texting/dialling etc is a whole different thing - you have to look at the phone and concentrate away from driving.
Possibly the worse thing I've seen is someone having a shave whilst negotiating roadworks at 50 mph on the M4!

This has the potential to be a very interesting thread (sorry Todd! )...
What constitutes distracting and at what level should it be legislated against? For me having two bickering (or even fighting) children in the back seats must be enormously (it is, actually!) distracting. And can you legislate against that?

With a previous job I remember driving merrily along when a rear passenger (with a learning disability and a bit of a challenging behaviour issue) suddenly went off it, trying to grab and bite the other occupants of the car (self included).Philip Chidlow wrote: What constitutes distracting and at what level should it be legislated against?
It was fairly distracting as I recall, but I fear not a situation that could be effectively legislated against...

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!
