Hi,
i had the same problem last summer. Local Ciroen dealer got me a new barrel and keys for 60 quid and told me i would have a great problem getting the old barrel out. Also advised me to remove battery as he had set a car alight in the past smashing out said barrel with screwdriver.
I had the same problem, could not insert key to remove barrel and had trouble re the 'button'
Thought about this for a while and decided to drive a screwdriver in line with the button with a few hammer blows which demolished the button and the whole thing came out in less than 5 minutes with virtually no damage to the rest of the barrel.
New one was almost zakly the same, more metal than plastic and a lock which worked the same. Another 5 mins and job done. OK, took a bit longer to put all the trim back but ime sure it saved a few quids worth at the garage and all works well now.

I've just seen this thread - should prove useful in extracting my old lock.

what exactly do you mean by in-line - in the direction of the barrel, ie into the side of the button?decided to drive a screwdriver in line with the button with a few hammer blows which demolished the button and the whole thing came out in less than 5 minutes

there is a little button on the barrel, u will only see this with all the plastic trim removed and u will need to remove this from around the steering column before you begin. Once all is removed, not a difficult job, u will see the button which is depressed when u have a key inserted and the whole barrel will come out.
As u dont have a key it will have to be done the hard way. I just inserted a screwdrive in line with the button and whacked it with a hammer till the button was pushed out the way/flat, and out came the barrel. job done.
Just a case of then unclipping and refixing all the wiring as the new barrel pops in just fine.
Remember to get the correct barrel though, will need to tell your supplier whether your BX has ABS or not, i think the wiring is different.
Good luck
Andy

Thanks Andy. I am aquianted with the small button and the 'i come in peace' Haynes way of removing the barrel as i took one of a 17TGD. This time things will be a little different.
So the button eventually depresses if you whack it hard enough on its top?
The replacement barrel i have is from the 17TGD a year newer, so should fit as my car has no ABS.
Then i just need to get some door locks but i've had an offer from a member already.

No matey, YOU dont whack the button with a screwdriver, YOU insert the screwdriver in line with it from the front of the barrel and push it away from the inside. Then the barrel should slip out. Mine did easily. YOU should find it not too hard to remove, i hope.maxgreenwood wrote:Thanks Andy. Max, if the screwdriver method doesn't work, I just grinded the button right off using a proxxon with a head like the middle one:

The button disappeared quite easily this way.

i don't know what to say! thanks
you've saved me a whole load of hassle there. The pipe flaring tool is also in the post, hope it works out for the 4x4. I'll need it back at some point as it belongs to my uncle.
Thanks everyone for advice and the lovely explicit pictures of different shaped grinding bits! I left a small set of mine up north with Rob i think. I was over at a friends recording place in London recently and he had the most incredible set of them in all sorts of colours and sizes. I almost want a display cabinet full of them.
right i'll get my coat.
