leak at rear struts?

Post by Mike E (uk) »

Hi,

Just got an advisory on the MOT.

I have a very slight LHM leaks which appear on the top side of the rear spheres.

Could this be corroded struts rather than simply a poor seal?

Anders had to replace his struts some years ago because of corrosion, and he used Xantia units which were/are much cheaper.

There are early and late versions of these struts, which type should I buy?

Any other suggestions please?

thanks,

Mike

You have leaks on both rear struts ! At the top where the sphere screws in I presume you mean.

Very very unlikely to be strut corrosion. Try refitting the spheres first with new seals and cleaning the interfaces. I have spare seals if you need some. But I have never ever changed the seals when I replace spheres. They have only ever leaked when the mating surface of the sphere had paint on it or was rusty.

If it turns out to be the struts then the old style Xantia struts are the ones to get.

the other reason the sphere joint leaks is when someone has fitted spheres without smearing LHM on the seal to sphere matting surface, this causes damage to the seal

Thanks for that info.

I will look for some new seals- I should have some somewhere- and change them before I buy any new parts.
