i took a look at this today - it has a lhm leak pretty bad around driver side steering rack - i'm not sure what this means. 'Stop Engine' lamp is on too. I'm not sure whether to take a punt on it or not - it's just what i'm looking for apart from condition!

Sounds like a few millimetres of the end of the return pipe is split. Cut the end off and reconnect. Fixed for nothing - but that may not be the problem of course and could only last for days, but may last years!

I'm more intrugued by the 1.9D badge on the back. Has anyone seen that before? These late models are a strange curio. Looks like it's just off a ZX front wing though and not original.

It's ZX font. Not too out of place though.

Another possibility is one of the two return pipes from the rear of the car that join the rear of the octopus in the area under the driver's side
rack boot. I've seen these popped-off the end of one of the two octopus "trailing tentacles" before now, particularly if the steering rack boot fouls them. The plastic pipes are a press-in fit to the "tentacles".

If it's one of these two pipes I'd expect lhm to be dripping from the rear end of the subframe on the driver's side. Anything else near the steering rack that isn't what I mention below would probably drip from the central rear edge of the subframe.

I've not had anything to do with them (yet), but could also be the area of the pinion valve, if it's not a split-ended return pipe.

Obvious question: the light was on. But was the lhm level just very low due to the leaks?
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Wll I used an automated bid placer as i was at work, which drops a bid in in the closing seconds.. - my max was just over a hundred! Obviously, the bidding had passed my figure by then and was therefore not put in & hence does not show as an actual real bid. Steve

and I was bidder No1 :) had me worried for a bit, thought I was going to get stuck with it

I'd already started disconnecting the engine and gearbox from our auto in readiness for the transplant, just wondered how I was going to get it home from Gravesend :?

i do find it very hard to judge the value of these cars - on this one, from a rushed inspection, I saw potentially a lot of work curing lhm leaks, little evidence of service history, clutch bite seemed low and 'on off' (are they all like that?) and generally quite a bit of work. I see cars being given away for zilch (how much is scrap value of a BX?) as the cost of paying someone to fix the car far exceeds likely resale value - so bx's are definately either appealing to enthausists or the drive 'em 'til they drop brigade i.e. MOT failure. So I thought around a 100 was a good price given the potential work required! It was a generally nice looking car though but then again there's always another around the corner!!

Yes I'd agree, £100 is about the mark for one of these without MOT and some known faults.

From recent experience £80-100 on the weighbridge but estate cars in reasonable condition always seem to attract more interest.

What spoke to me about this one was the seller has owned it for some time and his wording in the listing told me it could be a good car again. I was just looking for a project to use this really good 19d engine and autobox, not too worried about the work involved provided the bodywork was in good shape.

Like you say, there'll be others :)
