Exhaust System Alternative Options

Post by kiwi »

Current problem I am informed could be the reason for the heavier fuel consumption in the TZS is that an Exhaust baffles in the silencer or muffler as its refered to here, is loose and restricting the flow. Yes you can hear it in the exhaust system with a uncharacteristic exhaust noise.

I was able to price up the two parts from ^^ ^^ NZ came out as $700 which is a bit steep I think?

Have been told that an exhaust specialist can make up a system cheaper but would need to see the car and the nearest place is 150kms away (a day out at the busy time of the year workwise)

Just wondering if the current layout can be changed to a better layout that does not restrict the airflow or suck up the juice giving back a bit more umph :D

Has anyone done this though and what did you do?

Thats half my problem nothing is local here with one of the joys living in a country with 4.8 million the size of the British Isles.

The nearest motor factor place is nearly 2 hours away and experiance with them is they dont carry bugga all that I want. Would you believe they didnt carry an Oil Filter for a BX :? The line being oh it a European car you should have got a Holden or a Ford or a jappa crapper.

Some people just have no class really 8)

I am thinking about that option but the concern of it being thrown around on on such a long journet gets brought up but then I guess its no worse than a courier from our South Island

How much is $700nz in sterling? Surely its got to be cheaper or just as cheap to get a custom made full stainless steel one made, it'll last a lifetime & if the car dies, just remove it & fit it to another.

Well the price conversion becomes academic when you compare costs v wages. So I am not sure if 250-300 pounds is expensive or not but it sure does sound expensive.

I figured that if that is part or the cause of the Fuel descrepancy with the other BX it will take me about 30,000km or3 or more years to recoup the cost. Logic somewhere I think!

Ahh but this damn Kiwi built BX has thrown me another surprise the exhaust system is differant to what should be on it! :x

Well the rear silencer layout is differant with the silencer having an inlet on the nearside and the outlet looping from the nearside! An extra bit of pipe where it should be both in and out the same side :?

I better double that price then

I am going to have to try and get it up on the ramps for a decent photo! Because the layout of this exhaust on it does not match any of the schematics I have found.

Its one of those problem with the rattly baffle I probably would not have taken notice of until comparing with the other BX and discussions about gasflow restriction.

When someone said get a custom exhaust in NZ that usually means "Boyracer Wide Bore Exhaust" me now thinking maybe not as extreme as that.
