LHM in a Tractor

My local why you buy a

mechanic found himself eating his words the other day

They needed a litre of the Green Stuff for a tractor ASAP and the nearest holder of such stuff was Moi

Ahh was a good day to be the owner of a BX or two

Surely a grass cutting tractor only needs standard oils, not specialised hydraulic suspension fluid?

If it was a grass cutter with a hydrostatic drive to the cutting deck(s), then I guess LHM would do in place of the normal hydraulic oil...bit pricy though!

You guys crack me up!

I was being sarcastic when I said "tractor it was probably just used to cut their lawns"

All I know is it was modern big and blue and used LHM in its Hydraulic Circuit. I guess it could have been a French Tractor make? One never knows.

Anyways it worked to my advantage as now they will be keeping a stock of LHM rather than me having to courier it from another part of the country.

I did a little bit of research. All JCB Fastrac tractors have hydropneumatic suspension on the rear. Seems the world is slowly catching up with Citroen's 1955 suspension innovation.

Was it like this Kiwi? ( apparently some military vehicle also use LHM - you might get a knock on the door at midnight from the NZ army)

About that size in blue so quite possible but all tractors look the same to me

Probably a New Holland.

As a matter of interest, the place I work now deals with these beasties:-

(actually, that's an older machine, circa 1999)

Air suspension, but hydraulic everything else; even the radiator fan is driven by the hydraulic system! HV46 oil; not sure how compatible with LHM...

There are some of our machines out in NZ too, BTW.

LHM is just aviation grade hydraulic fluid, its not a specific fluid for suspension, just happens to work well. Same way that hydraunicage (sp) is simply aviation hydraulics flushing oil. You can use LHM in rather a lot of hydraulic applications (i'm sure someone has LHM in there trolley jack), there is little special about it!

And for reference, i have never driven a tractor without some sort of hydraulics.
