Supporting strap.

Post by Mothman »

Hi all,

took the BX back to the garage for them to check the clutch that they fitted a few months ago, alls well there but i noticed that the reserve fuel tank supporting strap had corroded through. Ime sorry if this is not what its called, would be pleased to know what its called. Will this be an MOT failure in the future? Are they hard to get hold of? Does anyone have a spare? Or in fact do i need to be worried about it as all looks quite solid?

Thanks,

Andy

yes it will/should fail the MOT, and i dont know if you can still purchase them,

but it should be quite easy to fabricate one out of some sheet steel, but mind to salvage the padding strip between the old strap and the tank as you will need to re/use this

were in east sussex are you

Thanks Malcolm,

it went through the MOT in Feb with it like it is. I could not see a padding strap, will look a little closer and see whats what. I wonder if some woven plastic strapping would do as a pad?

Ime just inside E Sussex, south of Tun Wells, small village called Wadhurst.

The tank is still supported with a nut and bolt through it, so it's unlikely to go anywhere.

Hi Ken,

so, if i remove all evidence of the strap then it wont be noticed?

I did that with one of my GTi's - I think it was ELF - and it passed it's MOT without the strap...

the padding is to stop the strap cutting into the plastic tank,

also i thought the tank was only held in place by metal strap and no other fixings,

if the MOT tester knew what he was doing he should fail this fault,

You've never tried to remove one then :?: it's a well concealed bolt that's twice as long as it needs to be, hence lots of rust on the threads.
