Plastic Window In C Pillar

Post by Tim Leech »

Im just about to change one of the rear quater windows in the GT for a new one that Ken (thanks again) supplied, has anyone done this before, I imagine I will have to break the old one to get it off.

I will be removing the interior trim from the rear of the car to get at it. I imagine they are bonded on with sealant?

Ta!.

Trying to remove these on scrap yards, Todd and I noticed that they usually come off quite easily at the front side, and stick badly at the rear. Your best chance of getting it off without damaging it would be to use thin but strong piano wire, starting at the front moving back carefully. But they indeed snap very easily. I'd say you don't have to remove the interiour trim at all, the window is just glued to the frame.

Right all done and looks FAB! I had to remove the C pillar interior trim to release the vent panel from inside (that fits below the window). You must have been more fotunate than me then as mine was stuck on all the way round with very strong adhesive.

I took it in too work where they have all the kit for removing bonded screens but even so it took a while with the piano wire and a small chisel but it was worth as the results are great! :D

Anyone got a drivers side?

"BX C-Pillar plastic things???? Oh yeah......they'll be down the bottom of the yard, just past the rocking-horse shite. There's a guy called Lucan, and a horse named Shergar down there too"

Well they're not that rare - Mk2 BXes with these panels almost universally have them in good condition regardless of the rest of the car and they get scrapped with the car! There was a guy on Retro Rides who'd sourced a pair for me but in NL and he was not able to remove them so that was that!

The search continues..

Ive only replaced the passenger side one with the one Ken supplied, I am still looking for a new drivers although a go with some G3 and the machine polisher has made it much better. I imagine its impossible to remove them without breaking them, that was certainly the case today as the old one ended up in about 50 pieces!

Would beg to differ: even when TR-spec BX Mk 2s were common on the road and in scrapyards I saw very few of these that weren't crazed, somehow rendered opaque or scratched. Admittedly I never was looking for one myself, so my attention was focussed more on other things.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

It does seem the Mk1 and Mk2 windows are slightly different and the later ones do wear much better, the ones on my 89 16TRS are fine, the GT's ones which is 4 years older but has done similarish miles and was also very much cared for were both very poor.
