Be rude not to have a few sharpeners then. I heard that the Allied army was delayed in its advance in the winter of '44/'45 because of all the buried and hidden Cognac that was revealed by the liberated residents.
I read a fascinating book a couple of years back about the incredible lengths that vignerons went to to conceal their best stored vintages during the Occupation - and to supply the lowest grade possible to the occupying forces during that time.

Along similar lines, when Paris was liberated in 1944, Luftwaffe raids followed a few days later in which destroyed the wines and spirits stores of the old Les Halles market area as was.

Despite this being a major trade centre and stockpile, it seemed to have very little effect on the amount or quality of alchoholic drinks available to either Parisians or the Allied forces flocking to Paris & indulging in considerable carousing during that period.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

Maybe the skyrocketing value of these masters of the road is dissuading their careful owners from taking them out at all. Is it that there are a few of these French classics carefully cocooned in their air conditioned storage, waiting to break the £100,000 barrier in value before Bonhams release them to the eager collectors around the world? :)

Sorry to bump an old topic but thought better than starting a new one, just an update from me on the BX situation up here, 3 words...

Dropping Like Flies.

Preston or as I like to call the ''BX Capitol of the UK'', seems to attract quite a lot of BX's but times are changing, only last year I could easily count about 15 BX's within a few miles of our house and used to spot new ones all the time. Since around Summer now I can only think of a few round here.

All the ones we know of are dissapearing, fast, apart from our 2 and the 2 at the house down the road from us (very nice 2 aswell) thats all I can think of, everyone I can recall in Preston has gone, not seen them for months in the usual places parked up or anywhere. That scrappage scheme thing might have something to do with it or hopefully they may have just moved on and are still going I don't know but it's a depressing state of affairs up here now. People finnaly choosing to give up for new cars maybe?

Went to the scrapppers in Morecambe yesterday who used to be quite good for BX's but not seen any there the past few times we've been, asked the owner who said ''ZX yeah theres a couple at the back down there'', I replied ''no BX'' to which he said ''BX!! Hell fire no not seen one of them in ages!''.

Hopefully a few new ones will turn up soon but just realising the past few days how all the old regular BX's from Preston have been vanishing, such a shame.

Sadly there's a sort of inevitability about it and the numbers of BXs on the road in this country will be diminishing exponentially (to use the term unscientifically!). I'm pretty sure there are only three BXs in Chelmsford and I have one of them.

And even Edwards - the usual goldmine of BX parts has only one or maybe two there, whereas four years ago I can remember eight or nine.

I am a community nurse working in Ipswich. My Citroen obsession is well known by my colleagues and patients and they inform me of any interesting Citroen's they see - before anybody questions the ethical issues of having a band of mentally ill Citroen spotters working for me, I'll assure you that they are all acting voluntarily! I reckon there are only 3 BX's in Ipswich (excluding my two, Citroenboi's fleet and GRX, which is now owned by my mate Ewan).

It's sad, a few years ago, it was common to hear the clonk of a BX with knackered droplinks coming down the road. Hopefully those that are left, are more likely to be owned by people taking proper care of them.

The problem stems that the cars are old and not the easiest to look after. Furthermore, generally (and not trying to insult people on here), owners do not tend to lavish too much money on them and try to talk values down, instead of up.

That does not help the BX's survival rate.

I've seen a mint silver grey estate recently in Sowerby Bridge and a whiite estate used for paint and decorating business often.

I've seen that one two. I've seen it at the small garage in Somersham and on the car park at Ip-City. I put a note under his wiper, asking if he'd sell his wheels to me!

By reading your posts there seems to be more Bx's on the roads here in Mauritius than in the UK. Most of the ones here are pretty much on there last legs or should i say struts. But can still be seen bouncing around i presume on their flat spheres.

From what you said about seeing them bounceing allong, I have noticed with all the BX's I see they waft allong as they should, its the xantia i see with rock hard spheres and back breaking ride. Which I hope suggests that most BX's are now in the hands of people who are looking after them, and the xantia has now become the cheap banger that the BX used to be. John

I always laugh when I see Xantia's with knackered rear hieght correctors with the arse either in the air or dragging on the ground. How people can drive like that, I'll never know. When mine went (on my old Xantia), I nearly cried on the 1 mile trip to the garage.

my BX is still around ! only used at weekends as I would not find a parking space again outside my house during weekdays. (the last area of free parking within 2 miles of central London :-(
thats why you will rarely see me, but the car is in good shape...(touch wood!)
