Our carbon fibre bonnets

Post by kiwi »

I wish I could reply on this thread

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Community/Mess ... x?id=85038

And point out to them that Crabon Bonnets are the norm on the BX range. I wonder what kind of chewing up would get when pointing out the tail gate on them is also carbon?

I think you got my point

Lightweight bonnets rather than steel. I think I have only come across a few of the steel bonnets in my time the last was off a TZS I had the interior out of.

Still I dont get the fuss they are making over having a lightweight bonnet. Compare the Pug 405 to the BX19 it has the same power pack (engine) yet out performs a pug IMO.

I love how all the boyracers paint their bonnets black. not satin, but gloss, which I'm not sure if it's to mimic a naked carbon fibre look from afar, or to imitate the style of japanese race cars from teh 70s...

That post was a classic   Loads of aggro over nowt

No idea about the difference in weight between the steel & non steel bx bonnets. I've got both types on my cars, the steel one certainly feels quite a bit heavier to lift, so the weight savings may be reasonable if you were that way inclined to swap them over

I feel certain that you could achieve a similar weight saving by simply driving around naked. I'm not necessarily recommending this, as it may prove problematical should you ever want to get out of the car during the journey, but a full set of clothing (especially in winter) will weight quite a bit...

erm, BX Bonnets are GFRP - Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic, probably around 70% plastic by weight making them a plastic bonnet not carbon or glass fibre.

Also (from an engineering point of view) a decent carbon fibre bonnet for a BX would be 1/10th the weight of the current GFRP and i guess 1/15th to 1/20th of a steel bonnet so quite a lot of weight to shed if you can afford it!

But i agree for most people its a bling thing. The best carbon bonnets i've seen (ie professional ones) are usually painted and have decals on so you would never even know!

And those muppets are the kind of people who would believe you have one as well

You may have noticed from the outset of this thread I was taking the P I S out of TM posters.

my pisstake at boyracer types painting their bonnets black. I jsut knocked all the paint off mine and got some rust going on.
got some horrified looks, too.

2 years of sitting outside the fence has now given it a beautiful patina look. dark dark brown. will be great once i get that thing going again.
of course I used a twisted bonnet from a crashed 205 that i had. not my good one

Erm whats a traffic light? Only ones around here are at Roadworks

Personally I prefer to keep the wrxs at bay in the twisty turns of the roads around here and catch them while napping, of course give them a straight piece of road and they are off on a fools mission right into the waiting arms of the Traffic cops 8) Thats assuming they make it around the inevitable bend at the end of the straight
