SAVE THIS AUSSIE BX!

Post by Giftpilz »

David Cavanagh, AussieFrogs Member wrote:This little BX 16TRS came in a while ago with a problem in the auto transmission, after a few checks we found it was internal and that the auto is not dead yet but very very sick so the owners decided to put her down.

So here we have a clean tidy BX 1600 thats only done 170,000km and runs very well, starts easy, everything works (even the AC) but she's destined for the crusher because I doubt anyone will want her.

I think BX's are a wonderful creature and I hate crushing them because there's so much plastic in them we get nothing for them. We'll stick this out the back and pick it to bits so if anyone wants anything sing out.
Check it out, it even has a factory tow bar (wonder why the auto died)Image

Certainly I believe that this little number is worth saving; I definitely agree with David that it's far nicer to see it back on the road than on a crusher.

For what it's worth, give David at French Connection a call. You heard it here first.

Don't wimp out Tim, I think you should travel to Australia (using no means of transport other than hitch hiking), then singlehandedly fix the gearbox using nothing more than gaffa tape, zip ties and a swiss army knife, and then drive it back to the UK. It would make the BXagon look like a walk in the park... ( )

OMFG! it's a Mk1 !!

Why can't the garage just slap a replacement 'box in if that's all that's wrong?

Probably think they won't see a return on it mate. By the time they've sourced a box and fitted it it's probably not worth their effort financially. Shame like but the way of the world now pretty much.

we're not in business to store cars or restore cars, we wreck them so it's not up to me whether it gets wrecked or saved.
is what he said when i reckoned he should save it

bx's aren't really loved in australia it seems, however, they don't really realise how few of these things there really are left.

oh well

Looks as though that bloke's into French cars judging by that line up behind the BX!
I hope someone saves this - working A/C too, perfect for driving across the outback! :D

G'day Graeme

Why, I hear you ask??? Well, the answer lies in the quoted prose below:
DoubleChevron, AussieFrogs Member wrote: If you want the car I'm sure he'll sell it to you. That car's basically more than worthless out here. Even without a dead auto they were bloody horrible things to drive (who ever thought of putting a slugomatic up to a 1.6litre carby motor should be shot).

Hey Dave, why don't you spend $3000 fixing the gearbox, $1000 registering it so you can sell it for $500 (which would be top $$$ for it running and driving).

seeya,

David Cavanagh, AussieFrogs Member wrote:Good idea Shane, I might go broke but at least I could sleep at night knowing I've saved another Citroen.

If anyone wants it, it's $500 as is.
Here it is clearly implied that the vehicle, although indeed repairable, is what is known amongst insurance circles as a "statutory write-off"; in other words, the cost of even swapping the current transaxle for a known healthy one would exceed the market value of the car, not to mention the cost of registering it.

Now I've actually met David: he was after all the vendor of my current CX-2200.. And he's a pretty nice guy to know; very professional. At the end of the day though, he's also a businessman.

As much as I'm looking forward to taking delivery of my "new" CX and slowly restoring it, I must also face the sad fact that I will never retrieve my expenditure if I were to resell it....But I guess that applies to all cars, regardless of make.

If it's one's passion to keep such machines on the road however, I see no reason why the effort should not be made to source a good transmission; hence, my initial post.

I know it makes no odds but there is a BX autobox for sale in this months Citroenian magazine. I imagine the shipping would be far too much money though sadly.

Sitting in my garage and think I may still have the other important parts is a BX16RS Manual Gearbox.

Now one snag is a 1000 km of water between me and that car and a border control that would stop the importation of said vehicle or actually I should say a Transport Agency that would deem it not up to frontal impact standards for use on our NZ roads.

There must surely be someone in Aussie who can save this beast although I say that there are several BXs I know of in NZ that are nothing but scrap now as well. Sign of the times I got an interior and soe parts off a 77,000km was mint 19TZS once. Damage to rear wing and floor plan which could have been fixable was beyond economic repair. Thats how it is!

The question to ask yourselves is is it really worth the hassle?

I would buy it myself but am slightly over burdened right now. I have already saved one from the crusher and have enjoyed the ownership experience. Yes its a MK1 auto TRS .... STRAIGHT as a die. No rust functioning a/c. 100,000miles. ..brand new steering...rear headrests.. nice colour.. I guess I just got lucky with a $300 (approx 130 pounds) buy it now price on ebay. She is my perfect knock around car with style and character. I must say performance is dismal but, if your not in a hurry, is more than adequate once she is on the move.

But if i was to attempt to sell her i would get nothing!!!

So one with a dud transmission would be possibly only good as a manual conversion (at a stretch).

Citroens have never enjoyed popularity in this country and the BX is an orphan amongst the outcasts.!!!

Series 1 Auto

Post by Mark.T »

Just managed to get back onto this forum having forgotten username an password... so this is my first post.
I've seen this BX recently as I was out at French Connection to pick up a rear brake caliper for my series 2. It didn't look too bad, though the interior was a bit damp as the driver's window was left open. Motor almost started when tried. I was tempted by the tow bar but had not considered rescuing the car as a whole... will have to check the finances and feasibility!
