BX vs Pug in the 4x4 stakes

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I'm sure Kermit won't mind, but in recent conversations we got onto the subject of the frailty of the BX 4x4 (in particular the transfer box), and I'd like to pass on a message he sent me:

"I told you about the chap and his estate, (Worthing Motors)
We got talking about 4x4 BX's and about the running gear from the 405mi16x4 Peugeot.

"And guess what; the transfer box is exactly the same and the Peugeot even uses a BX 4X4 rear subframe and even has an electric LHM pump fitted in the boot."

I asked: Do you mean the Pug has EXACTLY the same transfer box? Given the BX has such a bad reputation for failing - how does the Pug's cope with the extra power (and torque) of the 16v? I guess the internals are different.

"According to the chap at worthing motors he said they are exactly the same and even the internals are the same.
As to how they coped with the 16v i don't know maybe they didn't."...

Anyone know?

I don't think he's right Phil, as the transfer box also contains the centre diff (so the front and rear wheels can turn at different speeds)
However on the Pug this is a viscous coupling (which I think would allow a certain amount of speed mismatch, but not allow one set to spin while the other was stationary), whereas the BX was fitted with an electrically locked diff.

the transfer box looks the same externally, but the shafts of importance are different..
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Yes.

And it's been posted on here to utter death. This must be the 6th time I've said:

405 GLx4 has the same transfer box as the BX, and the same weakness.

405 MI16x4 as mentioned above is different, but in a very similar casing, and is a direct swap.
this might be a signature

the Peugeot even uses a BX 4X4 rear subframe
Not quite, whilst the subframe is very similar there are significant detail differences which would require modification before use on a Bx4x4, ie the mounting bracket for the height control device is significantly different.

I know this to be the case, as I removed a rear subframe from a Peugeot GL4x4 estate, together with anything else of use, thinking parts of the rear subframe would fit a BX4x4. Only the swinging arms, suspension struts and some pipework, and diff seem to be interchangable.

There is a lot differences between transfer gear boxes with all Bx4wd's and Mi16x4:
