16 Valve engine differences?

Post by TB2 »

So I'm still thinking about buying this 16 Valve. Seems in really good nick and the owner claims to have a full service history and new pipework. He'd also drop the price somewhat and it seems reasonable.

It has 148bhp.

Now, what's the difference between the two engines fitted to valvers? Tramontana tells me there's two engines:
D6C (XU9J4) BX 19 GTi 16V (87 Jul—) XB EJ/FC series
Bore × stroke: 83 × 88 mm
Compression ratio: 10.4 : 1
Maximum power: 160 hp at 6,500 rpm
Maximum torque: 177 Nm at 5,000 rpm
DFW (XU9J4Z) BX 19 GTi 16V for Germany, Austria, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Australia
Bore × stroke: 83 × 88 mm
Compression ratio: 9.7 : 1
Maximum power: 148 hp at 6,500 rpm
Maximum torque: 177 Nm at 5,000 rpm
Why does one have a higher compression ratio? Is there any significant difference? If not, why does one have more power then the other and is this good or bad?

They are both 1905cc mi16 engines, the D6C is the 160hp engine and the DFW is 148hp as fitted to the UK in the last year or so of production which had a catalytic converter and a lower compression engine hence the 12hp loss.

The D6C is the better engine but it depends on where you live and emission laws, as you live in Switzerland I imagine the D6C wasnt available over there.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

But why exactly does it have a lower compression, technically? Emission laws in Switzerland aren't as strict as some of the other crazy stuff. Would it even make sense to try and adjust the engine to get the same effect out of it as from a stock 160bhp engine? Would it have an impact on the durability of the engine?

it would be cheaper to buy another engine, I did. If trying to adjust DFW You would end up swapping inlet cam and pistons, which are nowhere to get, except forged variants.
