BX estate, RHD, French plates, Peterborough

Post by Dollywobbler »

Imagine my surprise when I came out of the office to clamber aboard my BX estate, only to find another in the visitors' section of the car park!

It was a grey estate, RHD but wearing French number plates.

Another 2CV (apparently belonging to a freelancer on Performance Bike magazine) keeps invading the car park too. I no longer have the Citroen monopoly.

The dark grey estate with French plates would be me...
I'm also freelancing on Performance Bikes (used to work there full time a very long time ago), as well as RiDE. I've had loads of BXs, currently have one TD estate on the road, another needing a water pump, and another for spares. Also got a couple of 2CV vans (fully restored AK400 and partly restored AK350 - both for sale!), a grey/red Dolly awaiting conversion to a van, a yellow/black Charleston in bits, and two H vans.
The 2CV-owning PB freelancer is Jon Urry, currently commuting several days a week from Croydon!
It's a noble tradition – I used to commute to PB in the Charleston from Loughborough and Ely, and former tech ed Jon Robinson also used to have a 2CV. There are loads of other bike journos who've been into Citroens, including Hugo Wilson (Bike and Classic Bike) who was a big CX fan, Richard Fincher (PB, MCN and Bike) who had a 2CV or two, and Olly Duke (ex-MCN and Bike, now in the south of France) who had a couple of H vans.

Crikey. Thanks for that Kev. Hadn't realised there was such a love of Citroens in the office car park! I'll have to try and catch up with Jon if only to give him a mighty pat on the back! Makes my 25 mile drive to the office seem exceedingly feeble...

I've got pics, but not sure if can post them on here.
The 400 is nearly finished, complete nuts and bolts restoration. Not perfect (paint lets it down a bit), but very good. I shudder to think what I've spent.
The AK350 is a bare shell on a chassis. Floors, sills, rear skirt etc all renewed, almost all welding done, and fitted with probably the last pair of original nos rear wings in captivity. Chassis has been modified to take disc brake setup - mostly needs a donor modern disc brake saloon to provide all the missing bits. It's in UK (near Loughborough), and will probably be going on Ebay in a couple of weeks unless someone wants to make me an offer!

Loughborough you say? Blimey. That's near enough to be dangerous... (sadly a house move and an existing 2CV project mean now's probably not the time, though I do like the 350s).

Go on, you know it makes sense... This particular 350 also has an extremely rare conversion by coachbuilder ENAC, with a flap above the rear doors so you can carry long things (pipes, ladders etc) without having to have the rear doors open... I've never seen another one except in old catalogues.

Yes, that rings a bell!
JR is sadly missed, but funnily enough both me and ex-editor Rupert Paul have recently been drafted back in to work on PB again – it's being relaunched, with a bit more of its old flavour back again and less pointless bolt-on parts.

Best you pop along and have a look then...
I used to live in Loughborough, which is how I got to know Nick Cordiner the 2CV man (at whose place the Ak350 is residing).
Still go and stay with friends in Mountsorrel when I'm back in UK working.

Bladdy 'ell. I was chatting to Nick on Monday. That's very tempting, especially as I've got a rotten 2CV currently sitting on my driveway which'd make a great donor.

I think I'd better have a think...
