Goodbye 9000 Aero, hello BX 17TZD....

Post by themildbunch »

Hi - I've posted here before as a sticken 16v owner running out of garage space but my account has become locked after trying to change my email address?

Anyway I'm back in a BX, my interest being rekindled from this site, fuel prices and how infrequently I see BX's now..

I found this one locally from this site. 1991 J, done around 111,000 miles, 6 months MOT and 11 months tax for £550.. I think I did OK.

Image

Good Bits:
  • Glove box hinges aren't broken
    All heater controls work
    Has original rear headrests
Just had some hydraulic leaks fixed at a strut and the power steering pinion.
Bodywork and interior seem pretty good for a car of this age.
Little rust that I can see apart from around the filler..
Suspension is nice and smooth front and back
    Original front and rear mudflaps!
    Has an MOT!
Bad Bits:
  • Rust around the fuel filler:

    Image

Bottom lip of the front bumper is cracked.

Seems to be too much gap between the rear wing and top of rear bumper..

Rear seats have some indentations around the top:
    Image

Doesn't have the original parcel shelf but a well made DIY one:
    Image

Black strip around the boot has crazed - looks like a transfer:
    Image

Black on the door frames has faded
Cambelt change is a little overdue
Previous owner changed the oil every 12 months (around 6000 miles) rather than 6 months..
Not 100% sure how the rear arm bearings are.. they don't look as bad as some but there is a little splay..
I'm probably being too fussy but I think this'll make a good family car and hopefully will stay looking good inside and out... anyone want to buy a saab?

Very nice and yes you did well especially with £160 worth of RFL. Pity about the rust round the filler but caught now shoudn't be a bad repair and it's only a small (cheap) & easy panel to paint on the estate.

It looks great - especially considering the tax and MOT.

Looking at the rear speakers - can someone much more knowledgeable than I tell me if these were estate only, or did this arrangement ever appear in hatchbacks?

Estate only, but they look a similar size as the one's fitted in the rear pillers, whip em out & get some proper 6x9's in, you won't look back honest. I was going to take some photo's of mine for the other thread, but i forgot & now Defender has my car up in Sunny Bolton way, so it'll be at least a week until i post them up.

Sorry for the slight thread-jacking, but I've been thinking of putting some 5" 2 way Blaupunkts I have on the parcel shelf, just have mixed feelings about hacking holes in it

thanks...
what would be the best way to deal with the filler rust? Can you get to the rear of the panel from inside the boot?

From the photo it looks like you may be able to catch that now without cutting it out. Clean it up thouroughly with emery or sand paper on both sides (I'm assuming you can get to both sides somehow on the estate) Then give it two coats of genuine Kurust followed by a filler primer then normal paint process. Followed by a liberal coating of waxoil on the inside and when the paint has cured you could even mask the outside panel and waxoil inside the flap area. You need to dig the rust out of any seams as much as possible and let the kurust seap into the seams.

Unfortunately Ray yours appears to be slightly beyond this

My brother says he could fix the panel, but I think I'm just going to replace it. Might have to hire a spot welder, though.

Nice car, those indents on the seat are from a baby seat and may fade with time, rear headrests too in the right fabric which is uber rare, the rear bumpers on estates arent a good fit as they are a carry over from the MK1 estate so I wouldnt worry too much.

Thanks... The previous owner was a self employed carpenter, I think, so these could be from wood?

I'm going to have to put 2 child seats back in that nice empty interior though!

Gave it a good wash today and found another area of rust around the rear bumper and a crease on the rear door..

It's also needs a bit of work on the driver's door hinge retaining plate - The top hinge has been done already but the rust is still there:

As the summer's coming I think I'll spend some time trying to fixing the rust and give it a good coating of waxoil or dinitrol...

Maybe a sticky on typical BX rust areas, their repair and points for wax injection would be a good idea?
